Now think about it in terms of genre and things get interesting.

I like looking for the little context clues, like for instance there was a sign in what looked like Portuguese, but I was about to pick a place in Brazil since it looked like it, until I saw a sign that had the country domain .pt. So far my top score is 10,921

Really a bit of a question of luck, sometimes you get one where you're in the middle of no where, no signs, no cars. Oddly, the answer to those generally seems to be Australia or New Zealand.

Has anyone actually recognized any of the places?

I haven't recognized them directly, but I got lucky that a sign said Prudhoe Bay, and I know that's in northern Alaska. Ended up only 10 km off and 5,000 points for it.

Two come to mind: one with a sign that very clearly said "Orkney" and another that was in the Bahamas.

Oh, there are dead give aways in the signs some times. I was talking more where you just recognized an area because it was somewhere you've already been. One time it was quite obviously the Grand Canyon, a second time was a Mayan temple. High score thus far 13,000+, low score something like 4500 (4 of 5 pictures middle of nowhere, no cars, no signs, just trees and a road).

And yes, I have clearly played this far too often.

I'm looking at some place that's clearly in Asia, on a coastline. It's tantalizing because there's public maps all over the place, but the car taking the pictures doesn't get close enough to any of them.

edit: although, yankee's right of course, that would just make it way too easy.

Indeed. I got 9791 points on my best try. The China one was easy because there were some traditional Chinese-looking buildings, as well as Chinese-looking lion statues.

I eventually correctly guessed that my first one was Japan, but could not locate the island I was looking at, so I just pinned someplace near the coast of the mainland. Turns out the island was in the middle of the Pacific. Derp.

12971, helped by a bus with a .ro, a repeat of an earlier picture, a location in Australia and a sign in French.

Okay, I played again and immediately recognized an area of Boston I've frequented. And that helped give me a score of 12901.

I did. Still managed to fail, somehow.

    Edit:

Got thrown into Fort Bragg in the same set of five as the one above for 21000ish total. Apparently being accurate to 4meters doesn't give you much...

I just had what were clearly Asian signs with what looked like palm trees. I guessed Okinawa, but it was another island in the Pacific. The very next picture turned out to be Okinawa, but I guessed Shanghai. Very annoying.

No high score worth bragging about yet.

    Amazing.

Now I can brag: top score 14,933. Would have been a few thousand higher, but I over thought an easy one. Stupid Winnipeg.

    Amazing.

15028! Thanks mainly to 6000+ points for one in Cozumel, with a sign that clearly said "Cozumel".

Some of those aren't necessarily bad things.
