Question Curious About Sock Accounts...

I read the blurb on sock accounts in the FAQ and saw the "Sock Welcome Party" thread, but I'm still wondering a few things about sock accounts :

1) How do you make one--do you just go to the log in button and create a new account just like you did with your first one (but having to use a different email address I'm assuming)?

2) Why exactly do people use sock accounts? I saw the reasons "for anonymity" and "just for fun" referenced in the FAQ but would be interested to hear a few specific examples from any user willing to share about why/how they use (or have used) a sock account.

3) I know that mods can see the IP addresses of all accounts and therefore they know whose account each new sock "belongs" to, but is there any way for regular users to see who socks belong to without the person using the sock revealing who they are?
