Why didn't Qui-Gon just TAKE Shmi?

He's a Jedi knight. Slavery is objectively wrong and evil. He would have been perfectly right to just forcibly free both Anakin and his mother, at force-choke-point.

It was largely his mother's death that kickstarted Anakin onto the helter skelter to the dark side.

The rise of Darth Vader and all that, was Qui-Gon's fault!

the PT Forum might be best for this thread

    but as Qui-Gon said

he "didn't come here to free slaves"

plus Watto wasn't giving her up, he can't force anyone to do anything,

Sure he can. Forcing a person to let slaves go is always good.

Well, if he took Shmi only, then we wouldn't have Vader :p

Don't they have slave transmitters in them? So if Shmi had gone out of range of it she would have blown up... Anakin's was deactivated when Watto lost his ownership.

At the time, they had to get the queen quickly and quietly off the planet. So I can buy that he wouldn't do anything about it immediatly. But the fact that they never went back for her, never did anything but leave her to rot, is a giant plot hole. It's actually being discussed on the plot hole thread in the Saga section if you wish to check that out

This could be seen as one of the weaknesses of the Jedi Order, that it is only interested in force-users. However, it must be noted that Tatooine was not a member of the Republic and so the Jedi had no authority there. Qui-Gon surpassed the limit in his decision to free Anakin; therefore freeing Shmi would be totally out of the question.

Yeah it seemed there was no way to release slaves without legitimately purchasing them. For Qui-Gon to go on his own crusade against slavery would could have possibly created a negative view of the Jedi (who would seemingly be trying to enforce their ideals on people of the Outer Rim) and a conflict between the Hutts and the Jedi/Republic, who at this point Qui-Gon was an official representative of.

It could be classed as stealing though. Stealing something from a thief makes you just as much of a thief as them.

Not a plot hole at all

Shmi's home was there on Tatooine, she said that herself when Anakin was freed and Shmi got freed by Cliegg Lars so nope, no plot hole there.

Qui-Gon's method of helping Shmi (elaborated on in The Life & Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi) involved getting resources to her that she could make use of at her own discretion- so she gave them to the guy who'd fallen in love with her, so he could buy her free.

Still seems neglectful not to check up- but Qui-Gon died shortly afterward, and Obi-Wan may have trusted that his master's idea would work out.

She said that to Anakin because she was trying to convince him to leave and be free. I guess because she knew that the Jedi love slavery and would let her rot there in slavery for eternity . They seem to accept an awful lot of it

No wonder the force chose Anakin to be it's "chosen one". I can see why the Jedi needed to be wiped out. Maybe I should start giving Lucas more credit.

Jedi can't do anything about it, it's not in their jurisdiction to help them, if it was, you can guarantee that they would help her.

The Zygerrians from TCW would disagree- it was the Jedi that shattered their slaving empire.

Letting the mother of one of their own rot in slavery is not a matter of juristicition. That's an excuse. They, or Padme for that matter, could have simply bought her freedom. They didn't do a thing. They just went on happily ever after while she rotted in slavery. We can dance around that all day long if you wish, but that's what they did.

They didn't even know that Watto sold her. That's how little they cared.

That's The Clone Wars, not the films.

Ironic that you use a story about the Jedi and their clone slave army as an example of how much the Jedi don't like slavery though

I'm talking about the reason the Zygerrians hate the Jedi in those movies- because the Jedi destroyed their slaving empire long before- and it's taken them that long to rebuild it.

As to their apparent inability to perceive that the clone army were created as slaves by the Kaminoans- this is a bit of an oddity. But Jedi opposition to slavery within the Republic is pretty well documented.

How exactly? The Hutts don't take credits, and unless you wanted Qui-Gon or Padme or etc...to pod race for her freedom, there was nothing they can do.

Then you use whatever currency Watto would accept. This isn't that hard, you just want to defend these characters. That's what these things usually boil down to here

Credits can be exchanged for goods elsewhere and those goods shipped to Tatooine.

Which was pretty much what (in the books) Qui-Gon does- has a very valuable exotic starship part shipped to Shmi so she can decide what she wants to do.

That is hardly an insurmountable problem. How do you think trade among nations has happened here on Earth since the dawn of time? I'm sorry, I just can't accept what you're saying as valid
