As it happened, the Marvel comics weren't rendered null and void- just put on a slightly "lower" level of canon, which gave present-day writers free reign to contradict little bits & pieces.

Despite that, they routinely used characters from the Marvel era- like the Mandalorian Fenn Shysa, and Vader's apprentice Lumiya.

The Marvels are downright tame compared to some other EU stories.

Crimson Jack in his space-speedo, tame?

...well, when put up against Luke encountering the one-armed Wampa and the pack it leads on his next trip to Hoth, I suppose Marvel is the tamer of the two... ;)

I liked Bucky O'Hare. Or Jaxxon as they called him in the Marvel series...

I love the Marvel comics for the fact that they were a far more innocent time, when canon was not that big of an issue and people just let their imaginations run wild.
In this context, Marvel is great fun, anything goes kind of crazy trip. Anything you think up can fit there and not stick out.

In the context of trying-to-be-serious later EU, when you get a Hutt Jedi or a bearded Hutt or Waru or space Ken dolls aka Hapans... it feels kinda silly. Mainly because they're trying to pass it off as "serious canon" stuff.
If you put any of that in Marvel, it would fit right in.

...so Marvel was basically a Star Wars comic series dreamt up by Kevin J Anderson? [face_dancing]

...actually, no, I take that back. I actually LIKED a lot of the Marvel stuff, unlike the Fanboy-Gone-Wild era of KJA in the '90s...

Kevin J Anderson has more superweapons-per-novel than there are chapters in his books.

One of the few things I liked that he introduced was using the old Yavin IV base as the Jedi Academy... while I'm not really expecting Luke to be training dozens of students at once, I wouldn't mind at all if his base of Jedi operations was still Yavin IV, rather than a new or refurbished temple on Coruscant or something. Someplace new as a center for Jedi learning could also work... just not Tatooine or Dagobah.

Also, thanks to Marvel, Mara Jade is the OTHER red-haired, green-eyed, Force sensitive Imperial assassin trained to kill Luke while also being his love interest.

Green-eyed redheads seem quite common in the Star Wars EU- Daala was yet another.

Actually they're something of a Sci-Fi trope in general thanks to Robert A. Heinlein using a lot of redheaded, stubborn, female characters.

As a caveat to my "like", I should note that I don't actually have a problem with the theoretical idea of Hutt Jedi.

I think this is a testimony to how little the fanbase cared about Marvel, until it suddenly began to trend again in the 00s. No doubt licensing relationships had a role to play.

It is. A space speedo is nothing against the stuff in The Jedi Prince, the almighty Waru or ghost in a machine Callista. Chrimson Jack is just the kind of person who would run around in his underwear. Nothing weird about it (well, not any weirder then Jabba employing human dancers).

Okay, I admit the universe eliminating pool table was a bit weird... a bit...

I'm seeing so many hilarious Freedon Nadd posts around here lately that I've got to find what material he's in.

Brace yourself, though...TOTJ is horrible to mediocre outside of Redemption, which somehow manages to make the rest of the series not suck quite so bad :p

Which saddens me...a title like Tales Of The Jedi ought to be AWESOME.
