We've seen a couple cyborgs... Vader and Grievous... but they're mechanical parts basically only existed for life-support.

We've seen a little genetic engineering, with the Kaminoans altering Jango Fett's clones so they would be more obedient... but it didn't seem to make them stronger, smarter, or give them special powers.

Could we see cyborgs and genetically-engineered sentients (humans and/or nonhumans) in the ST, people who have chosen to alter their bodies to become more powerful?

For such a futuristic place, Star Wars hasn't had that much of it so far.

I'd prefer to keep that stuff at a minimum. I do like Lobot.

There was this problem with cloned humanoids that may have been mentioned...

I want Star Wars to go back to it's mythological roots and steer clear of this "tech-y" stuff. I mean, I love science fiction, no doubt. But science fiction is far beneath Star Wars.

It's not so much beneath it as it is a backdrop for it. Star Wars is Fantasy in a Sci-Fi setting.

Something like Lobot, only with the mechanical pieces on the face (maybe a bionic eye?) and neck, maybe.

Lobot works because he's a cool background character,

I was thinking more like this (from Star Wars: The Old Republic):

Star Wars begins with..."IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY..."

The implication is that the story is not science fiction but mythological. The consequence is that it will use science fantasy to help the story (hyperdrives, robots and genetically modified beings (clones) and cyborgs (Vader, Lobot and Grievous)).

It is not meant to be Futuristic. Indeed, many of the artistic devices used in SW are taken from our own past and modified to give a used and familiar look so that we can, as the audience, immediately connect with the story. For example, Luke's speeder is not meant to be futuristic but have the feel of a car but in an unusual setting. The characters like Obi Wan, Luke, Han etc. are mythological tropes.

As such to just put science fiction in for the sake of being futuristic would move away from what Star Wars was intended to be. It is mythological in its foundations not hard science fiction.

That's exactly what Grievous did. I reckon it'd be awesome to see another character like Grievous, but what'd be even more awesome is if they could use the force, just imagine how powerful Grievous would've been if he could use the force!

There was also Lord Sadic in SWTOR, who was a cyborg Sith. I think someone like him would make a great villain in the ST.

Star Wars always featured Cyborgs, therefore they are an established part of the setting. Just as established as the lightsaber, infact. Therefore I believe Cyborgs should be in it again.

Do not forget that Star Wars has ALWAYS had at it's thematic heart this tension between Man and Technology. It's a running theme in I-VI anyway. I'd be surprised if it disappeared altogether from the ST.

    Allow me to extrapolate:

When I say "beneath" I mean the themes in Star Wars are far too grand in relation to science fiction. A lot of what makes science fiction is the minutia that can, more often than not, suck it dry of any sense of wonder; the technology of it all is petty compared to the mystical aspects that makes Star Wars what it is. Now, I also like Star Trek, but it is the sort of science fiction that is base and caught up within itself; tied down by trivial details concerning it's technological aspects in comparison to say, 2001: A Space Odyssey which is revealed in vast, broad and a simpler strokes that are far more thought provoking and mysterious. Because of that, it touches the soul more than any spaceship, laser gun, alien species or robot ever could. Star Wars is like 2001 in that respect compared to the lesser science fiction that something like Star Trek might encapsulate. Magic and the mystery of the soul is more meaningful than the jargon in a textbook; I saw the monster's face now I'm not afraid of it anymore; One day I found out Santa Clause wasn't real and Christmas isn't what it used to be. I know my car is constructed of thousands of finely machined parts put together in a factory but she's still my baby! You see what I mean? This is very abstract I know, but it's the best way I can explain the inexplicable. The meaning is transcendent, it's more a feeling than a fact and it's very meta because if I went into explaining the details, those details would drag down what I'm trying to convey into the depths of a kind of science fiction, if you will :). You see?

    Heheh.

Anyway, that's why I think science fiction is beneath Star Wars.

Science fiction regularly deals with grand ideas and themes, more-so than Star Wars itself in fact. Read some Philip K. Dick, Stanislaw Lem or even David Brin before you go off spouting nonsense about SF. I find it grating.
