I didn't even know there were deer in Hawaii.

I take fault with that map, since there's a ****-ton of deer in Mass, and in fact my dad did hit one not too long ago. There's a family that regularly crosses my driveway as well.

Spacial Linguistics -- How Languages May Be Shaped by Geography

A study of more than 550 languages around the world found that tongues spoken in high-altitude regions contain more sounds called ejective consonants, made with a burst of air, than languages closer to sea level.

Languages containing sounds called ejectives are more common in high-altitude regions (dark circles represent languages with ejectives, clear circles represent those without ejectives).

Interesting. Common links between far flung cultures like that have always interested me.

A gif of how much Boston's geography has changed due to landfill

    And here's Lower Manhattan.

In fact, the original World Trade Center used to be on the Hudson river itself. [IMG]

^^ Yeah, I always love seeing that lighthouse at Fulton Market looking so silly so far from the river.

And huh, I knew most of Boston was over landfill, but I never realized how much of Charlestown was landfill as well.

The international border between Finland and Sweden on the island of Märket:

What happened is that Finland built the lighthouse (the buildings in pink) on the wrong side of the island in 1885. Sweden smoothed over the incident by granting them that land, and Finland gave an equal amount to make up the difference, 100 years later, resulting in the border.

Wow -- I had heard about this but hadn't checked it out yet. This is incredible. Particularly the waterways and lakes in the Sahara/Middle East -- that sedimentation is horrific! Give it another 30 years and most of that landscape's going to be completely dry.

Edit: Actually, check out the little towns in the jungle regions. If you close-in on them close enough you can see them expand exponentially, mainly starting in the 90s.

Octopus because it extends its tentacles everywhere. By conquest in this case.

Today nations extend their tentacles through more... covert means.

Randall Monroe responds to the question "How quickly would the ocean's drain if a circular portal 10 meters in radius leading into space was created at the bottom of Challenger Deep, the deepest spot in the ocean? How would the Earth change as the water is being drained?"[sic] on his "what if?" blog, with a few versions of the Atlas at various levels of sea level(bonus: click next to see part two in which Mars is the recipient of the disappearing water).

Living in Michigan, I can vouch for the deer accidents. It's not surprising to see dead deer bodies laying by the side of the road, especially in winter and early spring, when the snow melts.

My mother once told me about the time when she and my dad were dating, she hit a deer on her way to work that practically totaled her car, and she was fortunate enough to be near my grandparent's house when it happened. She was at their house a crying wreck.

A little bit of family history involving deer.

Plainly a metaphor for the vile, insidious proliferation of Tsarism into the hearts and minds of the lower classes.
