How about we get a black hole generator instead? Where the antagonist zaps holes to the center of planets and consumes them by dropping a mysterious macguffin in their cores?

    It's a speculation thread, sir.

I am fully aware my ideas are equally as dumb as anyone else's without your snark.

A new kind of superweapon would be cool to appear sometime in the ST.
Seeing yet another Death Star get blown up would really be tedious.

I'd be fine with seeing Death Stars again, as long as they're not destroyed from outside flaws, and they actually get to blow up some planets first!

In The Essential Guide to Warfare, it states that construction began on the 2nd Death Star very shortly before the Battle of Yavin. It also appears in Choices of One, set 9 months after the battle of Yavin, and is described as looking like a skeletal half-sphere there.

The picture also appears in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe- though they are called "habitation spheres" there. Habitation spheres are also mentioned in The Old Republic: Annihilation- set some 3000-odd years before ANH.

What about having them taken the idea of a death star and just created like a peaceful one. Like, a planet. It doesn't have to be used in any sort of threatening way, it just shows that despite the Death Stars being bad, they continued to use the technology to support life in the galaxy.

Those would be Habitation Spheres. I tend to think of it as being the other way round- they already had the tech to build big space stations (though the Death Stars were a step above anything that had been created before) - what made the Death Stars different was the engines and the main weapon.

My initial instinct was to say "No more Death Stars!"

And yet the thought of an undercover mission to destroy (or take over) the beast from the inside is actually quite exciting...

It took 19 years to build the first Death Star... it's only logical that the 2nd one, bigger & more advanced, would also take more than a couple years to build. "Choices of One" is close in its description, but still far off. Brian Wood's "Star Wars" comic is more recent, and shows that the Death Star's not quite half a hemisphere away from where we see it in ROTJ... clearly not something they JUST started on, and not skeletal at all... it's also set about 9 months after Yavin.

The Illustrated Star Wars Universe only called the Death Stars in that concept art "habitation spheres" in order to make that art seem canonical... the main weapon depression on the foreground 'sphere' kinda spoils that whole notion. Another thing to thank KJA for...

It is hard to justify as something harmless that only looks a bit like a superlaser dish. Still, not impossible.

Alternately, since that particular bit of The Illustrated Star Wars Universe is narrated by Pollux Hax, one of the Emperor's propaganda people- those really are Death Stars, which never got completed.

Death Star III: now in 3D

do we want more death stars?

it comes across as Monty Python-ish if they keep building the same thing

Why would a harmless version of the Death Star include the dish?

Perhaps a Death Star destroys Korriban at the end of IX.

As some other thing- perhaps the entrance to the main docking bay. I could see people including craters on their artificial planetoid just because they think it gives it style.
