It is pretty clear to me that God exists in the same way as rights and laws exist, that is, they are social constructs which lack physical reality yet are nevertheless real in the minds of the people who created them and live by them.

I understand what you mean, but you are overlooking the vast majority of the realities about law.

On the train in the morning I always see people studying their bibles. I think they get a lot out of it, because so much of it is not a fun read, and that enhances the sense of contending with something difficult that, because of its difficulty, must also be true and important. If all of them decided to study a science book in the morning we'd be a more scientifically literate populace.
