    Romanticized or dirty?

I personally like the real thing, i stopped idolising almostanyone from that period a long time ago. I Ilike the real gruesome reality of it and cutthroatness of the politics (people literally get their throats cut). I think there are so many antiheroes on TV today that there is no reason to idolise these folks. I would prefer not to see the rape scenes after conquest, but everything else. Bring it on, i don't need sympathetic characters from the Mdle Ages.

I prefer them speaking earlier versions of languages that would be (near-)incomprehensible to modern speakers. With no subtitles.

I think if we stick to historical accuracy, we will find some good people popping up here and there to balance the more brutal, hard-scrabble nature of the time. I'd love to see a long-form mini-series based on the Hundred Years War (maybe adapting large chunks of A Distant Mirror).

    Whippersnappery? That's a banning.

(Seriously, the peasants should be dirty, but you should be able to determine gender.)

I used to object to the word **** being used, but then I looked **** in the dictionary and apparently **** has been used as a vulgarity since the 13th century.

Kinda like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, somewhat brutally realistic but with some out-of-place things like a black Muslim person in 12th century England.

I came in here specifically to use that as an example of my pet peeve, preachy politically correct insertions that take you out of the story.
I don't even really mind that movie for fun overall but the soapbox moments (and there are a few) are annoying.

I'm usually not impressed by Hollywood's idea of "realism" in medieval movies. I was very active as a medieval re-enactor for more than 10 years and I have a pretty good grasp of what is actually historical and what is just extra gritty and dirty in the name of looking historical. So when I watch a movie, I'd rather it be more escapist fantasy and less misguided "realism." I want my Middle Ages romanticized, idealized, and fantasized as far as they'll go without turning into a fairy tale.

Now I'm in the mood to watch A Knight's Tale.

While black people certainly would've been rare, it wasn't inconceivable. There was trade with the Muslim world, and Moorish Spain and North Africa weren't an insurmountable distance away. Also, while a Muslim may have been difficult to accept (though far from impossible), prejudice based on skin color wasn't really a thing yet.

That said, I haven't seen the movie. But it sounds far less annoying than the many secular humanists in Kingdom of Heaven.
