    I know, I know...everyone says '39. Not me, though.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you 1972!

    The Godfather
    Cries and Whispers
    Aguirre, the Wrath of God
    Cabaret
    Solaris
    Last Tango in Paris
    Sleuth

Just let this list register for a minute; it almost makes me believe in a higher power.

I challenge anyone to top this.

I intentionally left that one out in spite of seeing it in the theater opening night. I didn't like it. :p

    1941.

    Citizen Kane
    Dumbo
    The Maltese Falcon
    Sullivan's Travels
    The debut Fleischer Superman short
    Who Killed Santa Claus?*

*Admittedly I haven't seen the last one, as it's an obscure French film, but c'mon, it's called Who Killed Santa Claus?, of course it's perfect.

That doesn't quite top '72, but I would definitely place it in the Top 5.

    Runner-up: 1975

    Jaws
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Nashville
    Barry Lyndon
    Dog Day Afternoon
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    Picnic at Hanging Rock

    Done:

    1974
    Chinatown
    The Godfather: Part II
    Lenny
    The Conversation
    F for Fake
    Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Godfather: Part II matches The Godfather, Chinatown beats the others combined, the rest simply march on a road of bones and can add the extra points if there's any debate between the two Godfather films.

Then Blazing Saddles can turn up to do the victory dance, farting all the way.

The 1970s were one hell of a glorious decade for movies, regardless. Unmatched.

Darth Nub: Chinatown does not trounce Cries and Whispers and Aguirre, but I would agree to declaring a tie between '72 and '74.

Interestingly, you forgot to mention Young Frankenstein, which is the superior Brooks comedy.

OK, let's call it a tie, but IMHO, Chinatown trumps the OT itself.

    There. I said it.

Outside of the genre fan community, that's not controversial at all. Chinatown IS better than Star Wars and Empire (ROTJ doesn't count).

Of course, there would be a debate had Lucas included a scene of Luke slapping Leia, who moans "I'm your lover...I'm your sister...I'm your lover...I'm your sister!"
