They could re-build the Millenium Falcon and then use it in both the ST and spin-offs!

Not true, the site debunked it:

Lucasfilm is not set up as "Foodles". They are LFL Productions. They aren't hiding anything.

That would be brilliant if true. Hopefully, our lack of knowing is merely due to JJ's usual curtaining of spoilery material.

They have not debunked this. It looks very legit. Not sure whether the August date is going to turn out to be correct for shooting but it could be that they want six months to build sets and shoot second unit type stuff as others have suggested. This Foodles thing is a normal part of making movies. They use these legal entities to negotiate contracts for all sorts of things they will need in the production while hopefully avoiding being gouged. Lucasfilm has done it many times before as the original article notes. Foodles may not be the only one they use.

The truth is no-one here knows anything. Has anyone ever thought that we all are looking for answers that have already come to pass? Yes I'm saying that maybe the announcement of Disney purchasing Lucas Film, releasing the plans for Star Wars Episode VII have all came after the fact. For all we know Disney has already finished the script, chosen the actors, shot the entire movie and are currently in post production under some entirely different name. Doesn't it seem awkward to anyone that they only have less than 2 and a half years to complete the aforementioned when every other film took 3 years to complete? And they haven't even chosen the actor? Come on! This movie might be nearly done and they have us chasing shadows.

I say George Lucas and Disney ironed out this entire package back in 2010. Disney then ran with it under an assumed and incredibly different name. Shot the entire thing knowing that they would begin to reap the rewards after they were granted the rights in 2012 per the agreement. What better way to keep things under wraps than to have the entire thing already complete when you state you are about to commence.

    Or maybe I'm just crazy!

No one here knows anything yet. Once they start filming there will be too many people getting involved to keep everything under wraps

Not saying it's true, but Lucasfilm hasn't denied it... yet.

No, plates can be for planetary backgrounds for example. Third unit would be akin to sending famed director/cinematographer Ron Fricke to film lava like they did for Revenge of the Sith. He just shot lava for days. But that live action lava was then used by ILM as the basis for their lava on Mustafar.
Those can be shot anywhere the story requires. So they can shoot third unit around the world for backgrounds to then enhance with fx. Much of this depends on if they have a lock for the locations though. That way the fx team can start compiling elements to start building shots.

I would guess your looking at late January or early February for principal photography. Shooting will probably be about three months with possible pickups shots over next summer.

Well looking at all the posts here, the only thing that is inherently clear is that we, the SW masses, are completely in the dark about what is going on and when it started or will start :D

Interesting. I agree with ShaneP that they could be doing location shoots, and pre-production stuff to work with the animatics - it's been a looooooooong time, but I thought Hayden and Ewan were at the studio, working on their choreography, far before the principal photography started.

When does pre-production "officially" start? Does it stop them from doing some filming beforehand?

    That's true about the duel.

There are other projects at Pinewood at the moment that have been in pre-production for months and still haven't started shooting yet but various departments are working away to get everything ready.

Pre-production usually starts when a production has a locked shooting script but that can vary. And it did vary with the PT as Lucas drove McCallum insane by not finishing the shooting script until weeks before official production started.

As you know a SW film can have development and unofficial preproduction going on years in advance. Episode One's started way back in '95! But when they start building sets and bringing the actors in to rehearse, etc is typically when official preproduction starts at a studio locale. Episode One's official pre-production started about 6 months before shooting began.

Wait, didn't you hear? It's all CG now! All CG, 24/7. So, they no longer need maquettes. They just wave their arms about and they throw it into a computer an push a button....bam!... out pops a CG monster.

Yeah, so far the only legitimate info we have is that the new films will be narrated by Sir Alec Guinness and that Jet Li is playing Boba Fett. It's not a lot, but it's something, at least...

Rule that one out, Pirates 5 comes out on July 10th. Celebration 2015 being in April 2015 prior to Episode VII much as the first few celebrations during the PT came out a month before their respective releases, pretty much confirms a May 2015 release date.

If anything is going on production wise, it's probably for sets that will be reoccurring possibly throughout all 3 films so they can get as much detail and rigging done as they can. Filming probably wont be underway until around February next year.
