I think she did the best in the circumstances she was in. I think I liked her best in Episode I, but it's hard to trudge through some of that dialogue especially when you can feel the utter absence of anything resembling chemistry.

Amen on that! Natalie Portmans was bored and her acting was terrible, especially in EP2. In my opinion she is a actress for dramas and more "serious" movies, not for entertainment. She was awful in Star Wars and also in Thor.

Besides, Padmé is a bad written character and her lines are horrible. Worst Star Wars Character besides the infamous Mr. Binks....

Watching her do the very best to not laugh in Hayden's face when he was "acting" is the real reason she deserved her Oscar.

The Bearded One: (sigh) Cut. Natalie, why do you keep laughing?
Natalie: George, Hayden Christensen is terrible.
Hayden: From my point of view, Natalie Portman is terrible!
Natalie: (in between giggles) Well then you truly are lost.

I find that when Hayden gets to be subtle, he excels.

    She did a good job.

I would say the same about all of the actors in both trilogies . . . except for Mark Hamill, who proved to be a decent screamer.

    in my opinion not really.

She seemed to be worse in AOTC and TPM though,

I very much enjoyed Portman's portrayal as Padmé. I thought she hit the right notes -- kind-hearted, at times naive, self-righteous, self-sacrificing, politically engaged, and intelligent. I believed in her work -- when Portman was onscreen, I saw Padmé. Was it a perfect performance? No, but it hit the right notes for me. I would actually say Padmé is one of Portman's better roles. I've seen a lot of her films, but I've never been particularly impressed with some of her more acclaimed performances, such as Black Swan, which I never bought into -- to me, it always came across as Natalie Portman desperately trying to portray a mentally ill ballerina rather than the gripping story of Nina Sayer's descent into insanity. Granted, that's not completely Portman's fault either as I felt Nina was a very blandly drawn character.

But I really enjoyed Padmé's character. She was a good, but definitely flawed character. She makes mistakes and bad decisions and there's repercussions within the story that she must face as a result.

Natalie Portman is a very fine actress in general, and I think she did perfectly as Padme, and fits the description that Leia gives of her perfectly... "She was very beautiful. Kind... but sad."

She was also pretty young when she started working on TPM, so as the movies came out she herself was older, more experienced and able to give a better performance. If there is any blame to be had it is the writing and directing, particularly in AOTC, but as for Portman and the others I think they tried their best with what they had (and for the most part what they had was pretty great).

p.s. Nobody watches Star Wars for its brilliant thespian take on the human condition and that's okay :)

She was fine in Episode I, but I just don't think she had chemistry with Hayden for Episode II & III. Chemistry between a couple is not easy for movies, as there are countless times it just doesn't work between the two leads. While her scenes with Hayden are cringeworthy, I always thought her scenes with McGregor (very few of them) are pretty good, especially the one where Kenobi confronts Padme as to where Anakin was after the Jedi Massacre.

Hugely overrated and rather boring actress, simple as that.

I don't think she understood the role, or the films in general.

For an actress of her abilities she didn't really do that well. I do not blame her, though. Seeing her in other movies makes it clear that she can act, but her performance in PT was just painful to me. There is absolutely no chemistry between her and Anakin, the dialogue was plain and awkward and I would say that much more could've gotten out of her with better direction and dialogue revisions.
Again, I do not blame Natalie Portman, but I have to say that Padme is one of my least favorite characters ever.

I think her line delivery of "Anakin, you're breaking my heart" is actually really fantastic because, at that point, you have to play up the Soap Opera of the Space Opera because it's basically the big emotional tragic hinge that the entire PT swings on. And I think she does a great job.
