Thanks. Yeah, my approach was to basically make an "end of the war" version of the Bonnie Blue Flag, which was the unofficial banner of the Confederate States of America at the start of the American Civil War in 1861. I figured that they would adopt that as the national standard, but also pay homage to the Dixie Flag (Confederate Battle Flag) as well. So I made the Bonnie Blue the centerpiece and focal point, surrounded by the colors of the Dixie Flag. In my mind, it was the approach that made the most sense.

 

Was the Arkansas state flag another influence on your design?

 

These are really good actually.

 

Not really... I had seen it prior to the final design, but it wasn't really a factor... I just felt that the diamond shape would be the best way to frame the Bonnie Blue segment with the Dixie colors.

Oooh, really like the Australia one. The Kangaroo's a good replacement for the Union Jack- which I always found a bit tacky on other flags than the UK's.

Yes, but it's also the Qantas symbol. Me, I like the way it was done in the film Event Horizon -- Southern Cross, Seven-Pointed Star, and the Aboriginal flag occupying the space where the Union Jack was.

 

I Google'd the Qantas emblem. This is better.

 

The shading is a little distracting (I know why you do it though which is a good idea) but these are all very good.

 

I like flags. I like alternate flags even better. I like this thread.

 

I'd replace the Qantas kangaroo with the Australian coat of arms in place of the Union Jack.

The wings on the sickle are a nice touch.

 

I'm noticing you like the radiating triangle design. What I mean by that is the triangles with the common base in the bottom center. It's a striking design, I like it too.

I agree about Aeroflot, it's a cool logo. Which is probably why they're still using it two decades after the end of the Soviet Union.

I like to think the kangaroo is using the stars as launchpads: he's a starhopping kangaroo.

LOL! Thanks, guys. I do have some communist flags I'll be posting soon. I've always liked the Aeroflot logo, as well.

Regarding the roo pooping stars... well, the placement of the stars was meant to be symbolic... that star pattern is the Southern Cross, so I placed it on the southern part of the flag. The roo was put in the upper left corner to break up all the otherwise empty space. The colors on the flag are those of the Union Jack, and I pay homage to the Union Jack with the stripes to the far right of the flag.

 

Everything about this thread is completely enjoyable.
