It is true that a statement by Han isn't always 100% reliable, admittedly.

There has been a LOT of speculation on that topic. Nobody knows; there is no definitive answer. I like timmoishere's guess.

I've always heard it was a bit longer than that - 2-3 months.

Not sure if this belongs here, but does anyone know exactly where the term "netherworld of the Force" originally came from?

While we first hear it onscreen in RoTS- I doubt Lucas invented it solely for that film.

However, I'm not sure if Lucas's writings on the design process of the Saga have ever been published in an authorized version.

Why is that the only rebel troopers we see wearing those blast-shield-visor-things on their helmets down are the ceremonial guards at the ANH award ceremony?

C-Canon- same as most books, comics, and videogames- and the project is all three together.

I have one: Why did the stormtroopers on Tatooine bother to make the Jawa slaughter (and, presumably, the deaths of Owen and Beru) look like it was done by Sand People?

Possibly because they didn't want word to get back to the Rebellion that the plans were on Tatooine and the Empire was on the trail of them.

But an "Imperial stormtroopers slaughter Jawas" headline wouldn't exactly tell the rebels that the DS plans were on Tatooine.

True- but Vader is paranoid like that. "Plausible deniability" is in place.

Just like he conceals what happened to the Tantive IV- telling the Senate that it was caught in a meteor shower.

Hey, does anyone know if this is a picture of Carrie Fisher? I've never seen it before, but it looks like her:

I doubt it. I can tell right off the bat that looks nothing like the costume used in ROTJ. The colors and details are all wrong.

Yeah, but it would have been a different costume anyway - if it's authentic, that's from the Rolling Stone photo shoot on the beach.

Kinda looks too good to be true...

Was the Imperial attack on Hoth a victory? If their objective was to force an evacuation of the rebel base then yes, it was a victory. However if the Imperial aim was to trap the rebels on Hoth and prevent them from escaping altogether, effectively putting an end to the rebellion, then no it was not a victory, or at least a complete one.

What are your views? This question came to mind as the very title 'The Empire Strikes Back' implies that the strike on Hoth was a victory.

Tactical victory, strategically something of a draw. It was apparently something of a serious setback for the Rebellion beyond just being forced to evacuate their base (though most of that comes from the EU), but it obviously didn't eliminate them as a threat - though it wasn't necessarily intended to.

Good input. Indeed it is worth considering that the evactuation was more or less a success.

Works for me. Doesn't negate the Empire 'Striking Back' - the evacuation of Hoth certainly would have poured cold water on any notions the Alliance might have had of being invincible after destroying the Death Star.

(There's an argument to be made that the first film constructed the story so that it was implied that the destruction of the DS resulted in the immediate fall of the Empire, but I think the production/existence of further films eliminates that somewhat vague notion anyway)

^ I never felt that way in 77, and neither did anyone else I knew. Vader's escape made it clear that there was still more evil to defeat before the story ended.
