JCC Classic and beautiful cars

Inspired in no way by harpua's salad thread, post pictures of gorgeous classic cars here. Classic isn't time specific, but there has to be a timeless beauty to it (a la the 911's chassis or the Aston Martin DB9). If you post something like, say, a Chrysler 300C or Cadillac CTS-V, then you will show you don't appreciate true beauty and will incur my wrath. Rawr.



1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

Only 33 of these were ever made, and you had to be approved by Enzo Ferrari himself to get one (which means douchebag rappers or Bieber would likely not get their hands on one, because that's how Enzo rolls). All still run today, but fetch insane price tags at auction. The lines inspired the modern Ferrari 599, but that's not the point. It's a hand-built work of goddam art.

1956 Mercedes Benz 300SL

Famous for it's "gullwing" design and sheer speed, the 300SL was ahead of the curve in it's day and a highly competitive race car (despite lower kilowatt outputs than comparable Jaguar or Ferrari touring cars of the day, the 300SL had a lighter chassis and strong aero profile, reducing drag and making the car competitive (it won Le Mans, for example).

It also recently inspired the SLS AMG Mercedes, one of which can be seen as the safety car in modern Formula 1 races:

Range Rover classic, Brilliant design and it was in the Lourve after it came out. And its a beautiful vehicle to drive and the command seating is the best I have ever driven in any SUV. The later ones with air suspension were the pinnacle and they rode great. V8 sucked gas and gear noise wasn't the best and the power wasn't great but that was normal. But you looked damn good in one. I should know I used to work on them. They were my all time favorite LR/RR

 

Classic Morris Mini Cooper S. The new Minis are vomit inducing, but the classic Mini's are wonderful. I have restored a Mini K and a Mini LS 1275. Also love MGs.

 

1957 Chevrolet Corvette

Sharing design cues with the 1958 model, but without the less attractive dual front headlights, this competes with the (but ultimately trumps) '67 Mustang or '57 Chevy Bel Air for "most gorgeous American car" in my books. Look at it; the shape competes with anything from England or Europe at the time. That colour in particular stuck with me - I had a Bburago model in that scheme. But the scoops to the side, the unfettered American-ness of it (it screams freedom to drive, California beaches) - perfect.

 

1957 BMW 507

Sure, it almost killed BMW, but totally worth it.

 

I've never really understood this. They are just for getting from point A to B.

Yes, anakinsfansincebeforehayden! The Mustang in the 60s was so goddam iconic.

EmpireForever, 10x yes! You can also see the influence this car had on the later Z generation BMWs - it's there in the Z3, Z4 and most obviously, the Z8 (which appeared in the James Bond film The World is not Enough). BMW acknowledge the Z8's design was based heavily on the 507.

1954 Bentley Continental R-Type

Back in the 20s, when motorsport and grand prix racing was in it's infancy, Britain was ably represented by Bentley Motors in the form of their 4½ Litre model and in fact won Le Mans with this car (fun fact: back in the day, nations were represented by colour schemes on the chassis of cars. The British had green, hence "British Racing Green". The Italians had yellow, then later red which is the famous rossa corso that Ferrari still use. The French had blue and some great old Bugattis, which were a French marque despite the Italian name, can be found in this colour. Germany had white, but Mercedes-Benz and Auto-Union, now Audi, stripped the paint from the chassis to reduce weight and Germany raced as silver, hence "silver arrows" and why ads always show grey/silver Mercedes).

This Bentley is a stately affair, but like all of this marque there's a sufficiently powerful engine beneath the bonnet to propel it forward at speed. James Bond owned one of these (and a 4½ Litre Blower, originally, in Casino Royale) in the novel On Her Majesty's Secret Service but is unable to race with a more modern, smaller and lighter Lancia belonging to his future wife.

Just stunning.

I don't really understand art either, it's just paint on a canvas or words printed on a page or moving pictures on a screen or food that's been cooked or notes plucked on a musical instrument. I don't understand.

 

Or Christmas music, which is seasonable muzak at best.

Bugatti Atlantic Coupé

 

I want all of these cars for Christmas now dammit.

 

Mar17swgirl, the Type 57SC Bugatti Atlantic is a work of art, no less. Love it; good choice.

There's a fascinating non-fiction book in which Bugatti feature quite heavily; The Grand Prix Saboteurs by Joe Saward. Real life racing drivers, including the 1929 Monaco GP winner William Grover-Williams, were recruited by the Special Operations Executive to run networks of agents behind German lines during WWII. Bugatti, as a popular racing marque, provided a front for I think Robert Benoist to move about France unhindered. Cracking read; you couldn't make this stuff up.

Let it not be said that Ettore Bugatti's company didn't go on to produce amazing, cutting edge and gorgeous cars later...

 

Not a "classic" but I find it beautiful.

Tesla Roadster


Go head and tell my dream car is dumb. I know you are going to do it.

 

My favorite all time car ever. My dad had one of these growing up. 1970 Chevelle, his was candy purple. I loved taking rides in it. My uncle rolled it one night drunk driving.

 

The Tesla Roadster is pushing the boundaries of what a conventional sports car is, so no - it's not dumb.

Rox, there's a thing about muscle cars isn't there? Take the Dodge Charger. More torque than the wheels can actually handle, so flooring the throttle (gas pedal) will 100% result in wheelspin. But the look, the ethos, the attitude - it's peerless.

 

Oh no doubt, its by far my favorite era of cars. My dad raced cars until I was 12, he raced for Pontiac. Mr grandfather raced the old school grand prix series. Cars are in my family's blood. My son is a total car kid I already see it.
