It does look that way. It would be a bit silly for a friendly ship to get that close to a superlaser aperture- and the Vehicle Guide pic places it higher up:

so it does make more sense that the red thing is a launch bay:

The Forces of Corruption (FoC) expansion for Empire at War (EaW) makes it clear where the superlaser was located, at the tip of point of the main hull and far above the prow, when it fires.

Yeah were else would it be? I mean you can even see the giant superlaser "rail" on the ship.

Yes- don't know why my first impression of the red rectangle was "that's the superlaser aperture".

In fairness, it's not exactly friendly-looking.

    Eclipse the red-nosed Star Destroyer
    Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it blows

    ...But one foggy Empire Day
    Palpatine came to say
"Eclipse with your nose so bright
won't you lead my fleet to Onderon tonight?"

    This is my view.

What I could endorse is a vaguely Hand of Thrawn/NJO-style situation where the Empire is just a remnant, and they may even have to team up with them to fight against something. I'm not saying the Empire should be vanquished. I just think it shouldn't be a threat into the ST.

I don't mind the length of time after Endor as much as I mind the Big Three having to personally be involved in every bit of it. Mopping up an entire galactic power would take a long time, but devoting Luke Freaking Skywalker to that entire process is silly.

I'm beginning to suspect that "Choose, and act" is essentially a distillation of a form of fallibilism, which is best exemplified through the following scene -- which is actually the final iteration of a scene that plays out several times in the novel:

...he felt a warm hand on his shoulder, and heard a warm whisper in his ear: Go.
    It sounded like Ganner.
He frowned at Vergere. She returned his gaze blankly.
He would never know what had happened up there. He would never know if that voice he'd just heard had been Ganner's, or another of Vergere's tricks.
He would never really know -- could never really know -- much of anything. Truth is elusive, and questions are more useful than answers.
But he knew this: life is more a matter of choosing than of knowing. He could never know the eventual destination of his path, but he could always choose in which direction to take each step.
    He chose.

I was just gonna post that. Good catch, my Imperial friend! As an American of Italian descent, I am offended that anyone would confuse a Ferrari Testarossa with a Lamborghini.

Granted, I am actually more of a Lamborghini guy, but whatever. :p
