It seems people don't realise that it takes much more work to sustain the EU than not to. And what will it gain them? They can sell some more books that don't represent much of an investment to them. Contrary to the films, which do.

 

All it would really take is setting it late (adding just a little ageing makeup to the cast if necessary) and not using characters who are supposed to be dead, or planets that are supposed to be destroyed.

It's more work than "not sustaining the EU" - but it could maximise EU fan goodwill- without necessarily compromising the goodwill of other fans.

 

Yeah but why? EU fans have pretty much maxed out goodwill as it is, considering as they are the ones buying all those books.
Restart, and you can sell more stuff, to more people.

 

The thing is "not using characters who are supposed to be dead" is much harder than you make it sound when the characters that are supposed to be dead are 2 of Han and Leia's children and Chewbacca. It's not like it's just General Madine or something. Starting the ST off with Han and Leia having two dead children just might be "compromising the goodwill of other fans."

 

Maybe Han and Leia will have two undead children?

The way to keep the EU is by making the film about something else entirely, but if so, why make it? We want a sequel to the OT and we want it on screen. We don't care if there are books, Star Wars is films. And we want to see the important things, not be told. Unless it's a mystery. Mysteries are cool. But if it's already been book series about it, it doesn't really work as a mystery.

So let go of the EU, it's just not gonna have happened.

 

I can't believe we're at page 323 and still going through the "Why can't they just write around the EU?" argument. Seriously?

 

I think it's a trickle of new people coming in all the time. That's why it seems more or less circular, the same idea over and over. Maybe we should make an FAQ?

 

All of the characters in the EU belong to Disney, so there's nothing stopping them from lifting a few of the more interesting ones and transplanting them into the sequels. They have a whole treasure trove of characters they can choose from, and a pretty good idea of which ones are popular. Either way, nothing is set in stone yet, and the cannon going forward is being written as we speak.

 

I've got no doubt the EU will be mined for characters and story ideas, which makes a lot more sense than maintaining the current continuity as-is.
