In addition, I have to keep my 4 year-old out of the 13 year-old's bedroom. She took apart his Lego Millennium Falcon once, and I was held personally responsible.

My 8-year-old puts together Star Wars ships then takes them apart himself, mixing Lego sets together. He once had a Lego Minecraft creeper sitting on top of a Lego fence next to a Lego Even Piell.

My son used to do that too, and still does with the older sets. But the Falcon is sacred.

    I'm so proud. :D

Why doesn't your 13-year-old do what Han and Chewie would? i.e. Put it back together!

Well, of course that's what he did. But the wailing in regard to it being torn apart was not unlike that of an angry Wookiee.

Ah, so of the choice of being Han or Chewie, he's Chewie!

Oh god the trailer of The Starving Games. More uncomfortable than the porn Game of Thrones trailer by far.

The two main parts of that which excite me are A) being able to recruit units from your satrapies' rosters and B) playable Galatia.

Heh. Yeah I saw that. I'm torn. R2 made me very sad -- it was essentially an airhead. Very pretty -- great maps, great units with cultural variation, and even great unit icons thanks to a mod... But superficial campaign gameplay. EB and CK2 have spoiled me with RPing depth. But even vanilla RTW and Shogun 2 had things like family trees.

Hope the Caesar thing brings it back. It is at least rather character based -- hope that means it'll be more like Shogun 2; I'm remenided of the clan leaders and such.

Still torn on Caesar himself. Love the Julian clan (thanks to Augustus and Virgil) but I detest Caesar's politics with every fiber of my being. I'm pro-Senate :p

Today's random eavesdropping of people on the sidewalk: Someone describing what he wanted to wear to some party or something. He said he had decided on his "wedding suit," which was a "dark three piece" (a three piece! What, is he a stock broker marrying his portfolio or something? or just a beggar? either way, no accounting for his taste) and then he said it was "too flashy" so he'd wear it "without a tie."

    Ugh. Gag me.

    Accurate roleplaying? :p

I'm on Brotherhood as well, so maybe I'll be eating my words in the near future, but I actually don't mind when they kick you back to the present world. It happened to seldom in ACII that I actually found myself sort of wanting the contrast. Who knows though, maybe once it becomes more frequent I'll just be wanting to get back to stabbing things.

Oh, I have a question for you history buffs, which seems to be like 95% of this forum. How do you simply and concisely explain, preferably in as few words as possible, that slavery really was the primary cause of the Civil War and have the person believe it? If you've ever been to the South, you know those "we were totally blameless, just stickin' up for our rights!" people. Well, one guy is fairly reasonable, yet still buys into that. Any indisputable primary source?

Primary sources would be beyond my ken -- you'd need a period expert, somebody who had access to transcripts from speeches in state legislatures during the whole secession talk (likely to be your best bet).

Your best bet would be to point out the fireworks that ensued every time the slavery issue was brought up between 1783 and 1860: it always caused problems. The disintegration of the Whig party over the issue of slavery is another good one. Also just a general economic analysis of the south and how slavery was necessary for the plantation owners to continue their quasi-feudal lifestyles because without the slaves for poor whites to feel better than, they would've agitated against them.

Yeah, the latter one I've attempted, but it always devolves into the typical "it was about States rights!", "yeah, the right for States to have slaves" back and forth that really accomplishes nothing but headaches. This isn't a life or death argument or anything, but while I may not be a history buff, I enjoy it enough to not particularly enjoy having it mangled. Plus I fully admit to taking a perverse pleasure in insulting the South in every possible way that I can.

Having taken a Civil War course last semester, this topic is relatively fresh in my mind. Slavery was one of the main causes, but not the sole cause. Different economic systems (industrial vs. agricultural), a massive population gap that resulted in the South losing a lot of political power, and numerous cultural differences (caused by differing codes of "honor", living conditions, rural vs. urban, etc.) simply made tensions between the North and South far too great to result in anything but war. However, all of these differences were caused / enhanced by slavery. Remove slavery from the equation, and most of these differences still remain and would have likely caused a civil war, just not at that point, and it would have been nowhere near as bloody, and possibly even avoided by negotiation. Also, a fair amount of Southerners at the time would have disputed that the war was over slavery, since most of them didn't even own slaves. Most would claim a whole list of other grievances against the North besides its opposition to slavery that led to secession (so it seems nothing has really changed :p) . Hope this helps somewhat.

Heh, my history teacher was very much of the opposite school of thought: a very southern guy that would spend entire class periods ranting/proving that, despite what so many want to believe, slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War (which is why I asked for primary sources, as I know he showed us some very compelling ones, but I just can't remember what they were). I liked a particular saying of his: "I love the south, but I love history more". I'm not so sure I'd agree with the first part :p

Obviously there were other problems- very few things in life are truly that black and white- but I'm basically dealing with someone who's under the impression that slavery was basically an afterthought to the whole ordeal.

If it were merely about states rights, then the Civil War would have disposed of the issue -- and it didn't.

If their vassals turned on the Romans as often as they do in Rome 2 they would have killed each and every last one of them. [face_not_talking]

Maybe I could have worded that better: I didn't mean to imply that slavery was not the main-main cause, as it obviously was. You should point out to your friend that literally almost every other cause of the Civil War that he could bring up was in some way connected to / worsened by slavery.

Also, is anybody else having trouble with the "reply" button? Every time I've tried to use it the past couple days, it hasn't worked.
