I think this material cannot be successfully adapted to the screen. It's all about the marriage of the prose and narrative. A film cannot contain convey Fitzgerald's poetry.

This one sort of did with Tobey Maguire's narration.

I haven't read the book, but I loved The Great Gatsby. And here's five more of mine!

    Average – “You know, whatever.”

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) – Cody Cameron, Kris Pearn - **
    Scientists discover living food animals.
    Very creative designs; otherwise dull.

    G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) – Jon M. Chu - **
    Bruce Willis, Rock overthrow President.
    Still silly, but much better.

    The Lone Ranger (2013) – Gore Verbinski - **
    Western icon gets postmodern workup.
    Too strange to be successful.

    Man of Steel (2013) – Zack Snyder - **
    Clark Kent, Planet Earth meet.
    Amazing action can’t salvage script.

    Muscle Shoals (2013) – Greg Camalier - **
    Alabama studio revolutionizes popular music.
    Interesting stories, but no atmosphere.

    Average – "You know, whatever.”

Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself (2012) – Tom Bean, Luke Poling - **
    Plimpton becomes writer, has fun.
    Should be interesting but isn’t.

    Trance (2013) – Danny Boyle - **
    Art thieves need hypnotist’s help.
    Vibrant style surrounds uninteresting film.

    War Witch [Rebelle] (2012) – Kim Nguyen - **
    Child soldier struggles to survive.
    Needed a better lead actress.

Above Average – “Eh, you can.”

    Stoker (2013) – Park Chan-wook - ** ½
    Creepy uncle fascinates creepy niece.
    Wonderful direction with no story.

    Warm Bodies (2013) – Jonathan Levine - ** ½
    Zombie’s heart begins to love.
    Would make a great short.

Yep. I wish I'd thought to include this on my list. A more entertaining comic-bookish movie than anything Disney/Marvel has done.

The main thing I liked about it is that Greta Gerwig seems to be trying so hard all the time. The movie is a nearly perfect metaphor for her own career as an actress.

Still need to see Hunger Games 2 and 12 Years a Slave.

I had actually forgotten "Riddick." I thought the beginning of that film (when it was just a man & his dog) was pretty good, but once the bounty hunters showed up it got pretty stupid pretty quickly, and the less said about the ending (when Riddick is so masculine that he turns a lesbian woman straight) the better.

Don't bother with Mama. I went and saw it on the strength of its genuinely wonderful trailer and was horrendously disappointed. By the end, it had become laughable. The Conjuring is the most terrifying movie I've seen in the theaters in . . . a really, really long time. I always have to mention those first forty-five minutes; nearly unbearably suspenseful.
