To the general public, Star Wars = Luke and Vader.

Sidious is the true antagonist of the saga, but most people will think of Vader. Even when talking about the prequels, people will think of Maul before Sidious.

Every time Maul is referred to as the villain of TPM, I think, "No, Sidious is!"

Maul, Dooku and Grievous don't have Sidious' or Vader's presence if you know what I mean. Unfortunately for Sidious he is a behind the scenes villain more often than not compared to Vader.

I'm talking about the general public.

You're saying you've never heard "Darth Maul was the only good thing about the prequels"?

I think Sidious is the best thing about the prequels.

Maul was decent for one movie. Palpatine was fantastic for 3.

I'm gonna put some extra parameters on myself and talk about actual characters, ones with on-screen personalities rather than the myriad of "sideshow" people we see though put the saga. I feel like its kinda cheating, in a sense, to pick a character who is just there to look cool or whose personality is solely defined by outside material. So with that said my pick is definitely:

Not only is he an underrated character, I think he is severely under-recognized. In 1999, Watto was the films best indicator at the ability of CGI to create a fully realized character. While Jar-Jar, for all the hype that preceded him, was essentially a Tex Avery cartoon slapped onto a live-action canvas, Watto was a far more subtle and convincing preformance. He displays a variety of nuanced emotions, like the skepticism in his eyes transitioning into menace, that were genuine precursors to the showstopping preformances we'd be getting from CGI creations like Gollumn. I also just think he's a well done character. While some have accused him of being a racist caricature, I chalk that up to the general "Brooklyn sleazebag" aspect of his persona. He's not a one-note character, either. In the limited screen time he gets, we see that although he is greedy, he isn't completely lacking in empathy, and ultimately he's portrayed as something of a slave to his own vices, in that final, lonely shot of him hovering by the emptied seats of the Boonta Eve race.

Anyways, he's not my favorite character by any stretch, but a surprisingly nuanced one who often goes unnoticed.

When you put it like that, it occurred to me that perhaps Watto was a way of GL getting the 'sleazy used car salesman' character that he originally envisioned C-3PO as onto screen.

I've always liked Watto - always felt his crooked character might have worked in Jar-Jar's place.

Force Smuggler, I find that most people call Sidious "The Sith Lord" and think that "Sith" is his race.

Another underrated character is Tarkin. He destroys Alderaan and seems to outrank Vader.

    Dooku,

this is purely because of ageism in my opinion, and because "like Maul is so kewl, he has like a lightsaber bo staff dood"

    1. Qui Gon. On most people's 'most powerful' list the guy barely features, but I reckon his transcendence of the force and subsequent tutelage of Yoda and Obiwan from the other side indicate that the dude was onto something pretty big.

    2. Boss Nass. Come on, the dude's basically Mandela! Years of oppression at the hands of the snooty Naboo elites and yet when the need arises, he's prepared to stand beside them for the greater good.

    3. Shaak Ti. She's actually better looking than Aayla Secura underneath all that get up you know...
