Congratulations on depressing us with the most lamentable, miserable fact about our "society" possible.

$50 is too expensive? Even the new iPhone 5c is only $99. And these are basically computers.

Why would want someone want to buy the product you described at any price?

Because I need it to Tweet and check my Facebook page for likes and do all the things every day that I wouldn't have to do at all were it not for the fact that I own a smartphone.

Wocky, you own a smartphone. You are the worst hypocrite in the universe and you should fall on your sword in shame.

    . . .

How can you do this to me in public? You know it is never what I wanted. I am like sad, lost Jacob Marley, trying to warn others away from my fate while they still have any choice.

Guys guys, what's important is rejoicing in the good fortune of Jennifer Lawrence, though sadly the gross did not reach a billion dollars.

More U.S. data milestones from Pew research:

6 in 10 Americans believe in evolution.

In 2009, 54% of Republicans and 64% of Democrats said humans have evolved over time,
a difference of 10 percentage points. Today, 43% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats
say humans have evolved, a 24-point gap.

Republicans have become even more stupid since 2009.

If I had done that list, I'd have replaced the Jennifer Lawrence stat with the one about the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special's US box office gross.;)

It appears that the phone you're discussing, through Verizon, will cost $2020 over the course of 2 years, since it requires what appears to be a $80 per month contract ($40 for phone, $40 for 0.5 GB plan).

    Infants, the elderly, and me.

My family's phone bill is the same as always, $180 for 4 phones, now 2 of them are iPhones but there's been no difference in how much we pay (my old phone was 5 years old). It's the price of being in a network like Verizon.

Yes family plans are cheaper for the amount of phones you get. However for most not-rich people, paying at least $80 a month in addition to the cost of the phone itself (99 being the cheapest) is ****ing expensive. Do you honestly think it's worthwhile to spend close to 100 a month on a device that does the same thing that your computer does but makes it so you can do it everywhere, dumbs down your social skills and makes you an incompetent survivor? I'd rather spend my time off the computer being off the computer and living. There is absolutely no need for a smartphone unless you're a super busy business person who needs it for work.

    Goddamn, you tell 'em, SLG!

I still have my old flip phone and I don't see upgrading any time soon. Like you said, when I'm off the computer, I want to be off the computer.
