Sand troopers are flat, uninteresting characters. Particularly when they get run over by Jawas.

So that's why Smaug and Smeagol's name is so similar? They were both based on Fafnir.

Smaug came across as pretty all-knowing for a creature that hadn't been outside for almost a century. He knew of Thorin despite the fact he usurped his Grandfather Thror & Thrain was next in line to the throne before Thorin. He also knew of the gathering darkness (he knew something of the Ring) and generally seemed to have an idea of what was going on with the Company's plan. Barrel riding was of interest to him. Are Dragons psychic or something, or does he have some secret informer who gives him regular status updates?

Clearly Smaug gets weekly updates from the Thrush knocking on the mountain using Morse code

I think the Necromancer might have some kind of connection with him.

Didn't a bird also knock on the rock to alert him in the end of the first one?

So you agree that Legolas is a one-dimensional, boring character that only gets fan cred from girls and guys with secret gay feelings or who think jumping about is COOL? But you want to note Greedo is also crap?

OK, fine. Legolas is useless as are Legolas fanboys; but same goes for Greedo.

    Hooray for consensus.

Who would win in a fight?

    Smaug or a Balrog?

    Smaug.

Morgoth led a rebellion against the Valar with his Army of Balrogs. He lost.

After Morgoth invented Dragons, the Dragons would have defeated the Valar, if it wasn't for Earendil (father of Elrond and Aragorn's ancestor Elros).

If you could drain Mount Doom in a three inch tube then how many Lembas pancakes can you fit on top of my hobbit hole?

No, honestly? LOTR is not great fantasy. There's so many better fantasy works out there.

Indeed. JRR Tolkien is a wonderful collector and synthesizer of European folklore that has very little idea how to tell a good story. At all.
