    All that red :(

I'm surprised that Oregon is the only non-dark blue to recognize marriages performed elsewhere- I had figured that was more prevalent.

I like that everything has a translation, with root words and everything, and then you get to the Basque term, and it's just, "Basque." "It's a Basque word. Other than that, who the hell knows?"

So, I think the takeaway here is that in four of those countries, there's not even an oblique reference to Jesus or religion.

Atlas of the Historical Geography of the United States

This is an interactive web version of the original atlas that was published in 1932. The original contained almost 700 maps covering a broad range of subjects. It has some really cool stuff to look at and play around with.

Concerning the storms & freezing temps that so much of the (continental) U.S. is presently going through: the areas in purple there have a 90% chance of having temperatures at or below 32 degrees (F) on January 7th. Holy ****!. Thank goodness for our beautiful, consistent pleasant & sunny climate here in SoCal.

Its an impressive storm system for the country as a whole, but I'm sick of all the media drama being associated with it in Minnesota. The temps are no worse than we ever get each winter and it was actually colder at the end of last week (when my water pipes froze). Its not even close to record lows for many parts of the state.

Difference between solar time and standard time:

To put it simply, in green areas, the sun rises and sets earlier than in red areas at the same latitude.

Areas that observe Daylight Saving Time will largely shift into the red during that period.

As someone who lives in a "green" area - although I dislike coming home from work in the dark during the winter, I am very happy about the fact that I never have to wake up in the dark. That's much harder for me.

LOL at China. Equality by fiat does not have to entail cramming your entire country into one time zone.

You made me think for a second, but nope, it's latitude. :p

Areas on the same longitude that have the same colour are still going to have different daylight durations depending on how far they are from the equator. For example, the green areas of Sweden are going to have later sunrises and earlier sunsets during the winter compared to equally green areas of Poland or Libya (which are in the same solar time zone, but less affected by the Earth's seasonal tilt).

The colour only becomes meaningful when you compare places at the same latitude, where the Earth's tilt does not make a difference in daylight duration. Points at the exact same latitude with the exact same colour shading will have the same sunrise and sunset times (DST notwithstanding).

Apparently people in western China operate on both "official time" and "local time." How that works in practice, I've no idea.

Also, the border from China to Afghanistan is the biggest time zone jump in the world - a 3.5 hour difference.

**** Tibet and Xinjiang, I say. It's 10 am when the sun rises and they damn well better like it.

Yeah, you're right, my mistake. :p I was thinking of the daylight durations, which are of course independent of the time zones.

Really, two hours of solar difference doesn't seem that bad in exchange for keeping your entire country on the same schedule--especially when we arbitrarily change the time by one hour in the US for no practical reason at all.
