I think they are lying to please the fanboys and hateboys. This threads proves it is easy to fool them.

I've suspected from the start that they've been saying these things just to appease the "general audience"
They'd be surprised how many PT/overall saga lovers there are out there, it's just somehow the haters have louder voices...

It's because there are very, very few PT fans in the film/film journalism community, which is why nearly every editorial piece on Star Wars in the past 15 years has treated the PT like garbage, eventually leading to the illusion that "everybody" hates the prequels. I suspect it's closer to 50/50.

Anyways, I hope the outcome of their "commitment" is a film that uses practical effects in a similar manner to TPM. I think that film is visually the high point of the saga. It has aged remarkably well. The blending of practical effects and CGI is still some of the best I've ever seen, such as the long shots of Naboo, the tour through Coruscant, and the pod race. And I don't know how they pulled it off, but they used models for the Naboo space battle and still managed to get the "freeform" camera movement you get with an all-CGI sequence. Amazing.

Thanks so much for this thread and for sharing some really awesome photos. It's about time we have a thread like. The PT has some really amazing work in sets and miniatures that have sadly been unappreciated. I'd venture and say it's because most people are riding the CGI hate bandwagon, and assume that there was little, or no practical effects in the films. Sad.

Samnz is da man! So this is what you've been doing while you relegate all the lesser, nowhere-near-as-enjoyable tasks of fending off PT-haters to us? Can't blame you though; your posts here are exemplary!

Too busy atm to scrummage and post myself but you should really find more pics to post, Samnz! You'd be killing two birds with one stone: fighting off the OT-ers stigma of the the PT and getting a billion likes for each one of your posts. A pretty win-win opportunity!

I think the moment anyone starts Prequel bashing for "too much CGI" should be forced to view this thread Clockwork Orange style!!

    To get back on topic...

This location in Medenine, Tunisia, is now known as 'Skywalker Alley'.

    http://www.tunisiaonline.com/star-wars-tunisia/

What's particularly interesting is that some of these granaries in Tunisia, which were used for the 'slave quarters' of Mos Espa in TPM, were scouted for SW/ANH back in 1975/76, they just weren't used in the film.

According to the 1999 Making of the Phantom Menace book, most of the 'crowd' at the podrace was made out of coloured Q-Tips - which is screamingly obvious when you look at the photo, but it worked.

    On the contrary:

The Death Star hologram in the Rebel briefing room is generally regarded as the first proper integration of CGI with live action footage in a major motion picture. CGI had been used numerous times before in movies, but it was always the whole shot, e.g. Westworld, Wrath of Khan etc. Earlier films (2001: A Space Odyssey) tricked it by either projecting or playing it on a screen.

IIRC, the battle of Coruscant (until they crash land in the hangar), is a mix of CGI and digital matte paintings. The only (full size) models in that sequence were the two Jedi starfighters.

That's Ewan's stunt double in TPM.

Looks like ILM spent a lot of time creating CG shots that make it look like real people building real miniatures and real sets.

I absolutely love this thread. I'm a big proponent of the prequels, and I knew there was more model work than the films get credit for, but some of these blew my mind because I thought some of them were entirely CG (like the walker in the Battle of Geonosis or Lama Su's chambers). Just awesome. Keep it up! Let's see some more! :)

Ok, broken promise, but some more pictures.
Don't expect too much, they are rather anecdotal.

Quite sure "naked" 3PO would be CG nowadays:

The look of boredom on GL's face in so many of these pictures is the best part of this thread. I love seeing that it's just "work" for him and he doesn't take it to the sometimes scary level that the fans do.

It's obvious in the pictures only because they weren't meant to be viewed that close; I believe these were only used in wide shots and barely seen in the final film. Also note the Micro Machines figures used as the standing spectators.

EDIT: I actually couldn't seem to find the exact scene that set piece was in, this one is close, but not exact (notice the digitally enhanced audience):

The only scenes of the Q-tips that may have made it to the final film are below:

This is why I don't take that complaint about Q-tips very seriously.
