Miracle on the Hudson: On Jan 15, 2009, Sully Sullenberger manages to avert certain disaster and save everybody on board US Airways Flight 1549 by landing the plane safely on the Hudson River in NY City following a bird collision that took out both engines.

 

Sully did a great job, and so did his copilot, Jeff Skiles. Handling an airborne emergency like that is a team effort.

I did a speech on that two months after the incident. I think I got an A.

 

IIRC, the shooting started in the wee hours of the 17th. But that was in a time zone east of Greenwich, so it was probably still late on the 16th for the rest of the world.

I remember the sirens, and sitting in the sandbag bunker in my gas mask, and watching the afterburners of fighters launching and flying north.

And attack ships on fire off Orion's shoulder, C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannheuser gate... All those memories...

In Desert Storm? I spent 6 months at King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia. The place was still under construction, but the runways and some fuel pits were finished so the Saudis let us put up a tent city to live in. We had most of the A-10s in theater, plus F-15s and F-16s and F-111s would sometimes stop for fuel, and we were one of the air transport hubs for airlift. Back then I was a young crew chief, and I spent most of my days refueling transport planes of all kinds. Military types included the C-5, C-141, C-130, KC-135, KC-10, C-12, C-21, UH-1, UH-60, and many civil types: 747, 727, DC-10, L-1011, and occasionally an Ilyushin. I still remember the biggest load of fuel I ever pumped was 360,000 pounds of Jet-A fuel into a 747 (that's about 60,000 gallons in one plane).

 

How about Jan 16th, 1944 getting some credit as the first day of the Battle of the BULGE. A rough go of it for the US Army for a bit.

It was the World Championship until 1967, then is was the Superbowl.
