i think ultimately i like wagner bashing more than i like wagner. neitzsche contra wagner, this comic...



he's just such an easy target for ridicule because nothing is more needlessly and unrelentingly Serious than Wagner. he's the Senate of composers

 

It uses Tristan und Isolde in the intended manner. Plus you have the option of watching it with either English intertitles or Japanese with English captions for a truly weeabootastic embrace of the unflinchingly nationalistic.

That said, I've always preferred the short story. The film is well shot all things considered, but part of the beauty of Mishima is his eye for detail - to the point that I find he spoils me rotten, and it takes a bit to adjust back to other authors after I finish one of his books.

The worst part was he kept getting more serious because he bought into Schopenhauer's almost comical elevation of music above all other forms of art. It's like a feedback loop where everything gets more and more unironically over the top.

 

ill have to track down the criterion. i bet its one of the many youtube transfers anyways...

yeah his greatest skill ultimately lies in the written word. i dont read japanese, so im always shocked when i finish reading one of his books how superior it is to the vast majority of english writers. its like, what must this have been like in the original japanese?

"Senate of composers" is the greatest description I have ever heard.

Wagner is better than the other thing, but still not great. I think Zedd would be an improvement.

 

I was kind of hoping this was going to be more about the fascists that are here in the JCC.

He's no fascist. Using that label inappropriately is no better than the right calling Obama a socialist, as if they'd recognise one when they saw one.

 

I'm always amused and fascinated by the ones who are seemingly unaware that they're fascists.

No fascist would be as a big of a stickler on strict adherence to the Constitution and Bill of Rights as KK is.

Franco was pretty awesome because he was a fascist AND a Catholic zealot. He's definitely my fave.
