Pre-ANH, my favorites were the Eagle transporter from "Space: 1999"

And it's military counterpart, the Mark IX Hawk

I notice that a lot of these elaborate designs make getting from one place to another inside the ship unnecessarily cumbersome, and I can't help but question the thought process that went into them. It'd make sense for the layout to be as simple as possible.

But to hell with that. The Galactica is pretty sleek. The Normandy, even more so. I was going to say the Athena class from Starship Troopers too because of that slick nose, but the rest of it looks pretty mundane.

Edit: I almost forgot! The fairest of them all is of course the shape shifting craft from Flight of the Navigator. If the T-1000 was an alien, he'd arrive in style in one of these.

Now that's a pretty ship. And we will recall the voice of Max: "In this shape I can slide freely through your planet's thick atmosphere. In this form I can analyse civilisations thousands of years beyond your--"
"Yeah, but can you fix the seat?"
    "Compliance!"

I just watched that again a few days ago; Disney should definitely release it on Blu-Ray. The DVD version looks like it wasn't restored at all.

On another note, I remember thinking as a kid that "Pee-Wee Herman" did Max's voice, but I knew nothing of stage names at the time. So, when I saw the name "Paul Mall" listed in the credits, I took it at face value for years. It wasn't until after "Mystery Men" came out, that someone reminded me of him doing "Navigator". Its still one of my fave live-action Disney films.

Again, TARDIS is not a ship.

When most everybody on the show classifies it as a ship, it's a ship.

Now I admit I haven't watched Dr Who since Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor but I watched a shedload as a kid and I know that the TARDIS materialises at its destination. The only method of travel I can recall taht comes close is the wormhole generators developed in Peter F Hamilton's Commonwealth series. They, too, are not spaceships.

On another note, the "Red" and "Yellow" ships from the Periphery video "Scarlet" are pretty damned awesome:

The TARDIS can fly around normally in space like any other space vessel. It just also happens to be able to travel through time. It's definitely a starship, more so than say the delorean from Back to the Future which can fly but seemingly only within Earth's atmosphere.

I'd choose the TARDIS & the Normandy, and probably Red Dwarf

Yeah, but Ender implied that traveling through space in a time vortex from Point A & materialising at Point B doesn't make it a proper spaceship. Which is a fair point, but we have seen the TARDIS freely flying around in space numerous times in the show, such as when it went zipping around the Dalek saucer dodging missiles

I'd be remiss if I didn't also do a tribute to the luminous portable Las Vegas alien ships from the 80s: E.T., Close Encounters, Cocoon. I suppose Spielberg envisioned the species he put to film to all come from perpetually overclouded and severely light-deprived planets. Their technologies display a serious overcompensation streak in their behaviours...

It's a cautionary tale of the consequences of Arctic circle inhabitants becoming interstellar.

Well, in Cocoon's case it must be overcompensating for featureless glow worm bodies with insanely hot female bodies. Tahnee Welch, for crying out loud.

The Cocoon guys must come from a dark planet. Even their own bodies glow!

Serenity falls under "Other" for no better reaons than I never watched the show and I thought the ship is terrible looking.
