PT What do you LIKE about the prequels

Even on a thread about what we like about the PT, some even manage to discuss the bad things about it.

• Most species (Togrutas, Dugs, Neimodians, Kel'Dor, Pau'an, even Gungans and especially Nautolans)
• Pretty much all locations
• Cool characters (Anakin, PT Obi-Wan, Padmé, Kit Fisto, Plo Koon, Jarael Poof, Qui-Gon, Maul, Sidious, Yoda, Nute)
• Connection with OT
• The lightsaber battles.
• The Clone Troopers were badass
• Badass Sidious
• Badass Yoda
• The Prophecy
• Obi riding a dragon

That's a weird question. What do you like about Star Wars? For me, prequels are quintessential Star Wars. PT made the universe a truly huge, versatile and believable place with politics, wars, forbidden love, etc. it's not black and white like OT.

This is definitely one of the things I love, too. In retrospect, you can see that having the OT as the "forestory", despite the stylistic similarities of both trilogies, was really a carrot that George Lucas dangled in front of viewers in order to craft a new piece of art and explore his taste for epic mythology and the medium of cinema: a commentary upon and an expansion of what came before, yet also something eccentric, layered and ambitious enough to stand on its own.

Brings a deeper meaning to Vader's "breath" at the end of TPM. It's the maker's signature. It is, as the sound suggests, the maker breathing a sigh of relief and saying, "Phew! I made it back!" -- because, really, he might never have. The very fact that the prequel trilogy was committed to being made is, in my opinion, hugely significant in itself. By returning, GL turned theory into reality, and collapsed that which was perpetually in potentia into something tangible and knowable.

In returning to craft the PT, GL made a stand for himself, for the saga he helped create, and for his beloved art-form in general.

 

The OT nor the PT is black/white. It's simply that most choose to see this grey Saga that way and given how the presentation is indeed grey yet the Jedi attempt to force a black/white view it isn't surprising most follow the pattern.

 

The new worlds. Loved how each contrasted each other, as it did in the OT.

Thank you for the encouragement! I just have been here too long to know that loving the PT for the lightsaber battles isn't one of the "legitimate" reasons to like them!

 

I love this gif. I always will, despite the jokes made about it.

 

The pod race was one of my top three reasons why I love the PT. I wish that there would have been more of an involvement with them in the PT. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of them again in the new movies to come

I actually loved the extensive use of CGI, without it The Battle of Geonosis and the Battle of Coruscant would have been impossible to make on the same scale.

CGI also allowed the creation of unique creatures and locations that really expand and bring life to the Star Wars universe.

 

So much of them were actual locations and miniatures composited together.

 

I did enjoy the use of CGI in the PT when it comes to the locations and beauty of the different planets. I loved looking at the landscapes.

 

ROTS' CGI was totally overblown, and it sucked.

 

The title of the thread is "What do you LIKE about the prequels"...

If you don't like the CGI, why not mention something you did like? Such as the people of Utapau, for instance, and the work of the costuming department in bringing them to life? Or the use of real volcanic explosions for Mustafar?

What I liked? I liked the lightsaber battles, Qui-Gon (despite the fact he wasn't necessary, IMO), Maul, Dooku, and the Clone Wars (not the show!) to name a few.

 

I feel like Jinn was necessary in the aspect that we see who taught Obi-Wan and how his decision was made based off of Jinn's. He didn't play a huge role in the movies but I think he was somewhat necessary.

 

What did I like about the prequels? Pretty much everything. But in particular the way Lucas' love of cinema shone through, silent films such as Sign of the Cross, John Ford westerns and Kurosawa films. The way he incorporated elements of 'The Hidden Fortess' into 'The Phantom Menace' in a much bigger way than he did in 'A New Hope'. The 'armies rising from the grassy plain' quote of 'Ran' being brought to imaginative visual life in the imagery of the battle droid army rising to its feet in the end battle of 'Phantom Menace'.

I love how Lucas remained true to his slightly corny, naive vision of the saga. THIS is Star Wars. This is a tone that JJ Abrams will never be able to duplicate. I appreciate and understand exactly what Lucas was doing with the prequel trilogy. I hope he knows that some fans are behind him, and that the detractors are a vocal minority.
