They're one of the few post-OT EU ships that actually got a Lego model - Lego did TCW, TOR, and TFU models - but not other EU. Except for the TIE Defender.

The TIE Defender would certainly be an addition to the movies about which I'd have no complaints whatsoever. That thing looks just damn awesome.

EDIT -- And, in all honesty, while a lot of EU material may vary in quality I have to say it has provided some of the cooler starship designs over the years. One of my favorites would definetly be the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer. It just looks badass.

I am a HUGE fan of Imperial architecture and design. The Marine in me likes uniformity and straight lines.

Let me add Chu'unthor (I know that it's EU, but I love the concept). Basically it is a spacefaring Jedi Temple/Academy...

Yup. Pair up the Death Star with an Interdictor cruiser and a few Lancer frigates... [face_skull]

I'm gonna say it again... NO BLASTED SUNCRUSHER! Send that idea into a black hole! At least its insane armor anyways... I mean geese, it survived a death star blast with no damage...

I was kinda crazy in that game Id often play Empire but wait 200 days before doing anything beyond Recruiting (and/or Sith training), building buildings, and soilifying my planets loyaties... just letting the rebellion grow and expand for added challenge. While playing as the Rebellion Id try to beat the game within 50 days (100 failing that) again just for challenge.

I typically went for 4 Super Star Destroyers an Interdictor or two and 30 Escort Carriers with TIE Interceptors and Lancer Frigates plus Troop transports. Simply put that many TIE Interceptors (sometimes for vairity I do TIE Defenders for heavy but expensive hitters too and TIE Bombers for use against key capital ship I.e. Corriellian Gunships) are dirt cheap but overwhelm any fleet in moments in big enough numbers and the Super Stars slaughter the Correlian Gunships which blow up the TIE Interceptors quickly. Then I just invaded their planet (Darth Troopers for invading, Stormtroopers for Anti-espinoage, and Imperial Garrisons/Fleet Troops for cost effectiveness in large numbers (garrisons defence, fleet for invading)), blowing it up meant less rescources for me and lowered every planets loyalty. Plus the risk of a good trench run or Death Star Sabotage was still ever present.

If a planet was too defended I just hit their planets with Mines or Refineries (key word is or not and, together they gave you 50 maintainence points but alone nothing) this way their buildings, fleets, and troops would randomly self destruct so their heavly defended planets became a burden. Once I had their resources where out of wack you just hit evey weak point that opens up.

I had games lasting to day 6000 easy, but I let it get that crazy on purpose just so the game would get harder... since it was even a more amazing game then. In games lasting that long I'd often have ~10 fleets of the size I mentioned, some defending key worlds other just attacking unrelentingly. On Corcuscant I typically have 600+ TIE Interceptor squads, they just overwhelm anything.

Uh... back on topic... um... we need huge fleets that are more effective than what the Empire had at Endor, um, yeah that was my point, not about how awesome Rebellion was... yeah that's it.

If the Suncrusher is supposed to cause Stars to go Supernova shouldn't it be able to survive a Death Star blast? Didn't it survive an explosion in the trilogy?
Also loved it crashing through that Star Destroyer.

No, the effect wasn't insant. It was designed kinda as a stealth ship, slip ins into a system fires its torpedo, flees in to hyperspace and a few hours later the sun goes nova. It had no reason to have that kinda armor other than KJA wanting it to.

As to the flying through the Star Destroyer physics where broken big time there... it should have slowed down but for some reason it maintained its speed just cause and only lost its five useless laser cannons (why shot when you have ramming speed and invicible armor)... it was all but outflying the Falcon.

The ship is a bigger Mary Sue than Mara Jade and A dozen other EU characters combind... it was wishfulment and not something that belonged in a universe where every ship has a personality, strengths, and weakness. The ship was just too perfect.

Been awhile since I've read the books but wasn't the ship still there at Cardia and that Nebula when the suns exploded? Cardia was a close call from what I remember.

Your complaint about the SD thing makes sense. Still cool to me all of these years later.

Yeah, I could see cribbing the TIE Defender design for the ST. Each OT movie had a different TIE model in it, TIE/Vader's Advanced, Bombers, TIE-INT. So totally just steal the defender!

Yes, it was. However he fired the torpedo before he foundout his brother was still alive on the planet now a brainwashed stormtrooper. Long story short he demanded his brothers return but was lied to/or file mixup (forget) causee them to tell Kyp his brother was dead, in a fit of rage he fired... then foundout his brother was alive and the boss imperial brought his brother there for escape passage, fight ensued and Kpy witnesses his brother and planet get vaped... oddly again the force of the explosion didn't slam the Suncrusher into the planet and kill its occupants... this made Kyp think again about the darkside and lead to his redemption.

Again crazy bad logic scene and plot with the ship... it sounded cool when I was younger 20 years ago but when I reread it two years ago I just was facepalming non-stop.

I was actually joking with the pic, I'm not really advocating a SC.

I did want to comment on the text in bold. Let'sbe honest, the Death Star had no reason to have an unshielded exhaust port and the DSII had no reason to have ship sized passage ways into its core other than GL wanting them to. ;)

First off, it wasn't unshielded... it was only Ray Shielded though, meaning torpedos could pass through it but not Lasers and Ions

Now as to your point about both only being there due to their creators wishes. True... both only exsisted due to their creators wanting it... but there is a difference between a fatal flaw on a Space Station as large as a moon (it represents both the power and resources of the Empire while the RAY shielded exhaust port represents the arrogance and hubris of the Empire) vs just making something so awesome and overpowered that only the conviently placed cluster of Black Holes can defeat it (it represents marketing to the dumbest person in the room who needs MORE AWESOME and had no analogy of why it was done artistically beyond who it was targeted at)

Actually it was hit by the fringes of the beam, rather than directly (a beam that had been powered down so it could take multiple shots at starships in a short fringe of time) - and its engines were damaged by the hit.

A point is made in the narration, prior to this, of how even the "quantum armor" won't survive a direct hit.

??? It was there so that Luke had a way to destroy the deathstar, nothing deeper than that.

The Suncrusher was a ridiculous concept. I've got nothing against the idea of having a ship that can blow up suns, but really, at least have it somewhat make sense in the context of the universe. The Death Star was a huge battle station and a large chunk of it's interior was devoted to the superlaser, which can "only" destroy planets. While really, really, really tough to damage with conventional means, it is not invincible. If you get it's shields down and pound it with a fleet of capital ships, you won't destroy it, of course, but at least you'll melt some armor plates. The attacks won't just bounce off without a scratch. Then you come up with an invincible, literally invincible, fighter sized ship that can destroy a sun? Fine, let it be able to destroy a sun, but then make it two times the size of a Super Star Destroyer with 85% of the interior devoted to this insane weapon.

The Suncrusher makes some fanfic crossovers look like Nobel prize material.

    Also, it looks like crap.

Close to the time Jedi Search was released, Star Trek Generations was released - with a tiny missile being able to destabilize a star and cause it to explode.

Star Trek has always been ridiculous, what it does shouldn't be used as an excuse to defend the Suncrusher. Its two seperate fictional universes.

Trekies got a stick up their butt that they need to beat Star Wars in terms of explosions ever since Gene Rodenberry said Star Wars would beat Star Trek if it ever came down to a fight. Its as simple as that. To them its always we can out science you, and we can even out science what we did last week too.

Half the time the size of something in that show is done for cheapness of the prop and science is the excuse for its size after the fact. They have forumlas devoted to why most races in their series look humaniod, rather than just say dressing up an actor is cheaper than making muppets like Star Wars or Farscape. Again, they always just create a 'it science' excuse... its habbitual to them.

Trek isn't the only setting with starbuster weapons though:

    http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StarKilling

A case could certainly be made that the Sun Crusher combines too many "bests" though - best armor - best starbuster (in terms of size) and so forth.

As to why Kevin J. Anderson chose to do it that way - whether it was to "one-up" the movies or not - we don't know.

I was a young teenger when KJA's Jedi Academy books came out and of the main characters was a teenager who was best buddies with Han Solo and then he went on Force/Dark-side emo-angst trip with an invincible weapon that exploded freakin' suns. Suffice it to say, I loved the hell out of it.

Good gravy..... did someone just use a ridiculous concept from Star Trek as a way of excusing something from Star Wars?

Been clearing out junk of my house all week... came across a box full of Star Wars micromachines (plus tons of other star wars starship models). Clearly they didn't go into the junk pile but the display proudly pile... my suncrusher is still in the box though (not only since I hate it but it looks dumb laying on its side, shoulda come with a stand) but other EU ships are on display now regardless of there EU status (though Lando's Yatch is now canon due to TCW). Can't wait for the Skippery Blastboat and Z-95 to become canon too (maybe they are and I'm just forgetting at the moment, lol)
