Anyone ever notice that the guy second from the right looks a hell of a lot like George C. Scott? Same scowl and everything...

Mystery Roach, I noticed that in the new TCW Yoda episodes,
the Priestesses state that they're beyond good and evil.
I was reminded of your theories about the Whills.

Considering that Palpatine considered himself to be above good and evil, is it possible that Palpatine wanted to become a Whill?

I think it's more that evil people have a tendency to place themselves above the concept of morality in order to justify their evil actions, but that is an interesting notion.

If he does manage to come back as a spirit, there will need to be some explanation as to how he's able to do this when other Sith aren't.

Certain Sith motives really are morally ambivalent (the Plagueis novel had me almost believing in the Imperative...) but the fruit of their motivations does tend to classify them.

Lucas refused to tell Filoni whether or not the Priestesses are Whills. Might Lucas be maintaining a surprise for the ST?

Can I say that I honestly don't care whether the Priestesses are Whills or not? It doesn't change one bit about their story.

What is important to me is that the Jedi and the Sith themselves become more mysterious again.

The source is from Dave Filoni's latest RebelForce Radio podcast from yesterday. I haven't listened to it, but those who did say that Lucas wanted to keep the Priestesses mysterious and that while Filoni suspected they could be Whills, Lucas would not identify them as such. Further, it would seem that Lucas' belief that no Sith spirits really exist is reinforced in this interview, so my EU explanation that those Sith specters may be real could well be the wrong interpretation after all, and that the Priestesses were indeed conjuring up the illusions as part of Yoda's trials. There are plenty of other clarifications regarding the TCW bonus content arcs as well, but these are the main takeaways that could be most relevant to our TCW/ST discussions.

I do wonder if the Priestesses will appear in the ST. Learning about them would be very interesting.

Yes. At the moment, the Mortis and Yoda arcs of TCW strike me as a great big waste of time, but we've got to reserve judgment until we find out whether or not one or both of them are the best sneak preview of ST ideas we'll ever get.

    Man I hope not.

The prequels, EU, & the clone wars all suffer from showing and telling too much. I want things to be mysterious rather than explained. Just because I might ask the question of why Vader seemed confused about Obi-Wan's death, doesn't mean that I need it to be explained that it's some ancient force technique that Obi-Wan's old master was researching. I really don't want the new trilogy to complete a 9 episode arc but to be a new 3 episode one that doesn't rely on being heavily referential of the past 6 or outside material.

Whills sound more like they belong in Farscape than Star Wars.

I think that the Celestials that made a brief appearance in the Clone Wars might be the closest thing we will ever see to the Whills in Star Wars. Their story arc really brought a lot of the mysticism back into Star Wars that was missing in the PT and, while I would love to have a little bit more of an idea as to who the heck they are, I think trying to explain them too much could be dangerous.

I don't see how Whills in the ST would be any different from Sith in the PT. The OT novelizations introduced the term "Sith" and then the prequels revealed what the term meant. Similarly, the OT and PT novelizations introduce the Whills so the ST could explain who they are.
