Amph Heaven is for Real

I'm curious how dementedly religious this movie will be compared to GINT. Also, no reviews up on RT yet.

 

Words fail me in general most times but even more so in this thread

realtalk, tho, kid's about 14. since this particular scam seems to require (on the child's end) only speaking engagements and interviews that can be easily coached, ive seen no evidence he's as intelligent and empathetic as a marjoe (who had to do entire evangelist acts in a traveling show revival as a child) or as intellectually curious as a jonathan krohn (who started reading books off the approved list when he was in his late teens and was already well on his way to rejecting his upbringing by the time college put the final nail in that coffin). colton might be comfortable just coasting on the gravy-train his parents devised for as long as possible, but i hope he'll eventually come to feel outraged at the use he's been put to. this would be a necessary step in developing an intellectual (and a spiritual) life of his own, independent of his parents' delusions (or, more likely, their avarice)

If I had a nickel for every time I've hallucinated Jesus riding a rainbow colored horse, I'd have 40 cents. It might have been Gandalf though or Jerry Garcia.

 

So this movie is going up against Johnny Depp's Transcendence and A Haunted House 2.


That is one awful weekend one could have at the movies.

 

With regards to the word "lying", what makes me cynical in this particular case is the bit about him knowing about his miscarried sister. I don't doubt that the child had some sort of seemingly transcendent sensory experience, and that he interpreted it through the milieu of religious imagery he has been brought up in it, and did so liberally after his parents' enthusiasm for his story. Even if one doesn't buy the "journey to heaven" interpretation of the child's experience, as I obviously don't, nothing in this narrative qualifies as "lying"--just embellishment by a young child and an eagerly credulous family. However, there is no similarly innocuous rationale for the child's putative knowledge of his miscarried sister.

 

The reason these kinds of stories are so popular is that, frankly, faith just isn't good enough for a lot of people for whom faith is supposed to be good enough.
