    Every time I see or am reminded of that video, I get VERY scared and worried for Star Wars. This speech is a total mess and he has absolutely NO focus whatsoever. Does he want to make a new universe with new fantastic worlds filled with intrigue and mystique (which is what SW is) or is he only interested in so-called "mystery boxes" where nothing is ever explained even when it's finished?

    Star Wars is a linear fantasy that has catchy plots and direct storylines with a new twists thrown in there every once in a while. From the TED speech, JJ is nothing about that at all.

    I don't think his philosophy to filmmaking or the point he made in his ted presentation are unfocused at all. I heard "mystery is the catalyst for imagination". I get what he wants, and although I'm the type that wants to be spoilt rotten leading up to the film, I respect that he's trying his best to save the surprise.

    The privileging of mystery and suggestion have long been prime values in the best literature, in contrast with narratives that simply spell everything out for the audience and destroy their ability to imagine on their own and come to their own conclusions. I think the frustration with JJ has more to do with the audience's learned expectation that they deserve easy and hand-fed answers to everything, a kind of epistemological entitlement caused by science, tech, and bourgeois power.

    Having said that, since SW functions as much like entertainment as it does art, it's appropriate that answers are dolled out at a sufficient rate to keep the audience relatively docile. [face_devil]
