There are a bunch of series then that I've liked several games from while being indifferent to annoyed by the other entries - Ace Combat, F-Zero, Battlefield, Just Cause, etc

 

Ohhhh, difficult one. There are so many series to choose from, and my preferences kind of depend on my current mood. Besides, differences between games in a series tend to even out the overall rating ... and there are series I haven't played in toto.

Tonight I pick ...

...Lands of Lore: I loved every single game in the series, all for different reasons.
...Heretic/Hexen: I see those games as a single series. Loved them all so far, even 3rd person view Heretic II (and that's quite a feat...usually I don't like the over-the-shoulder view at all)
...Elder Scrolls: I liked Arena, loved Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, so I feel that this series qualifies.


Okay, this makes 4, but so what?

Runners-up:

...the Soul Series. Very high quality in the atmosphere, handling, graphics departments from the start of the series to the current edition. But it's a top 3 list and not a top 4 list.
...Tekken. Mainly because of Jack.
...Kyrandia. Ooh ooh, hot hot!
I rule out ...

...Doom: While I absolutely adored Doom 1 and 2, I didn't like Doom 3 much.
...Command & Conquer: I liked pretty much every game in the series except for 4. Which I absolutely hated.
...System Shock: Loved the first one, found Nr. 2 meh at best.
...Thief: I loved the first two (Thief: Metal Age is one of my favorite games of all time) and liked No.3. But I haven't played No. 4. I can only hope that it's not bad enough to ruin the whole series for me.
...Mass Effect: I haven't played No. 3 yet even though I bought it shortly after release. Hmmmm ...
...Quake: Those games are way too different in style and quality so as a series, I found it just mediocre.
...Unreal/Tournament/Championship: Once again, greatly varying quality. I didn't like Unreal II at all.
...Final Fantasy: I played 7, 8, 9, X, X-II and 12 only, so I'm hardly qualified to judge the series.

Baldur's Gate
XWing (TIE Fighter Included)
Dynasty Warriors

Honorable mentions:

Total War (Mainly Rome 1 and Medieval 2, but Shogun was ok as well)
Might and Magic (Mainly 6 thru 8, was too young to appreciate the first 5)
Planetside (now that there is a PS2, it's technically a series... right?) Spent 10 good years playing Planetside 1, and made some great friends.
Warcraft 1 thru 3 (and Star Craft Brood war, wasn't a big fan of SC2)
Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and Super Mario World

Metroid Prime series
Super Smash Bros. series

Honourable mentions go to the The Getaway duology and the Sands of Time series of Prince of Persia games.

I also liked EA's run with the 007 licence. Activision's go at it was disappointing.

I wish I could've included Mass Effect but damn if things went off the rails in that final installment. And Assassins Creed...well, let's just say that the Ezio trilogy wad memorable, but I think the franchise has well and truly jumped the shark.

 

So, when he said top three... you just thought "he obviously meant for everyone but me, for me he meant top 15 or thereabouts"?

I can say for sure that both Boba_Fett_2001 and jp-30 both count Battlefront among their top three and sometimes just list it as 1-3.

No, actually I just picked my top three and mused a bit about those series that didn't make my top three for a host of reasons.

But I just found out that I can't count ^^.

 

I truly miss the X-Wing series. About the only thing that was worthwhile about PC gaming back in the day.

And yeah, I'd be lying if I didn't say I like the GTA series a bit too much.
