Fifty new comics today from Free Comic Book Day. Eighteen from Dragon's Lair's personal stash, plus two new ones this year. Spent twelve dollars on 50% back issues. Then spent twenty two dollars at Half Price Books, on comics. Three of which were not fifty cents.

 

To those who don't think Free Comic Book Day is worth it, I suggest checking this out.

Long lines full of people and children in costumes, having pictures drawn and getting comics.

 

I got the Helfer/Sienkiewicz Shadow trade back in March, and I've just been looking at it again. Sienkiewicz' art is a little wilder than I like it (I consider his New Mutants or Elektra:Assassin artwork the pinnacle of his style) but it's still breathtaking,

Worth picking up if you like Sienkiewicz or have an interest in the Shadow.

 

At a comic shop here in Memphis for free comic book day they had people dressed as Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper, a member of the Emperor's Royal Guard, and an Imperial Officer. It was pretty cool. I should have taken pictures but didn't think of it at the time.

 

Then I'm afraid it didn't happen.

 

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

 

Check to see if their Facebook and/or Twitter accounts have photos.

 

They did have a few on the facebook page. Doesn't look like they managed to get any of the Royal Guard though.

 

One year I went, the Darth Vader either used a ring tone for "The Imperial March" or he had an iPod. Or he had something built into his suit to play it.

 

Yep, definitely a bigger deal in the US. Cool photos though.

I also like the look of those shops, Dragons Lair interior looked excellent. (Yeah, sounds so obvious but the tales of bad shops make it so much harder for the great ones.)

 

The problem with the stores that have bad reputation is that the managers or owners, depending on who does what, let the power go to their head. They forget what it's like to be ridiculed or mistreated, so they take out their older frustrations on people. Or they have a hard time accepting that fandom is more than forty year old guy with bad B.O. reading comics and playing D&D. The ones that aren't like that are the ones that strive for excellence and are better remembered. Around here, the shops all model themselves after Dragon's Lair and the owner of that is a nice guy to begin with.

 

I had a chance to flip through Rocket Girl, and it's a great looking book, and creator-owned to boot. Now I have to make the decision to tradewait or buy individual issues.

Finally! I've looking for the hard cover for awhile. I accidentally ordered the German Hard Cover months ago. Fortunately, I was able to return it.

If it wasn't for trades, comics would probably not be a part of my life at all.

In the movie thread I mentioned being so enthralled with the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune that I went straight to the comic book store and bought $130 worth of his comics. So all my (comic) reading has been in that world recently.
