Hm. I misread the "cast announced" thread title as "CATS ANNOUNCED." I almost clicked, expecting cats, but then I realized that looking at the evil Disney thread would just make me sad.

Time to go cuddle my cat.

Now, on the other hand, if they were casting SW7 with the cast of Cats, that wouldn't make me sad. :p

Has there ever been a Rebel Legion vs 501st laser tag game? Cause there should be.

Also, GrandAdmiralJello - have you ever seen the 2001 Atilla the Hun movie?

Never heard of it. Is it terrible? I usually only watch films set in antiquity if they have pretty costumes or sets, since they're invariably bad.

It was a long time ago...but I remember liking it.

Oh sure, it is full of all kinds of historical inadequacies as you would expect (for example: I am not an expert on Roman armor, but I don't think they had the classical look so late in history), and it didn't have have the biggest budget by any stretch of the imagination.

Still, I liked it for being one of the only historical movies that I have ever seen even touch on the complex frontier politics of the Roman Empire - shifting alliances, hostage exchanges, barbarians serving in the Roman Legions etc. In particular, much of the movie revolves around the concept of Casus belli.

Plus, I like it sets up some mystical mumbo jumbo at first, and then subverts the hell out of it later on.
Namely that Attila finds a sword that supposedly means he is destined to rule the world. Only, in the last battle, it is shattered by a random roman soldier, leaving Attila rather dumbstruck.

OK, may I just ask: how many classicists and/or ancient Roman historians are there here, anyway? I know GrandAdmiralJello is one, but are you in that category too, MercenaryAce and The Loyal Imperial? Because, wow, that would certainly be... something. (I don't suppose anyone else here is a musicologist...?)

For those interested in such things: Steam currently has all of their Star Wars games at 66% off (hoy hoy) until May 4th. If you haven't picked up the Dark Forces series/KotOR before, now's the time.

Oh no, not me at all.

While I am a historian, I focus on World History: the political, economic, and social connections between regions and cultures.
I have to confess my knowledge of history is more wide than deep, but that is what interests me.

If I had to pick a specific region, then it have to be either Chinese or Central Asian history, since those are the ones I know the most about. I am especially interested in Indian, African, Pacific Islander, and Native American history as well, but I have had difficulty finding good sources on them.

So you're an expert on the mighty Empire of Ryukyu, eh?

(late antiquity films are few and far between, and they can't seem to avoid using high empire equipment since that's what the audience is used to. It's still better than late republican or early imperial films which depict Trajanic legionaries though. I once saw a documentary about the Punic wars (NO autocorrect, not the pubic wars, god!) which used segmentata and Gallic helmets. It's a shame too bc I feel like the elegant simplicity of the Montefortino is under appreciated.)

Eh....sadly, I know little of Ryukyu - mostly that it played a large role in the Chinese tribute trade networks. It is something I would like to learn about in the future though.

Very true about the equipment. I mean, I do understand the desire for a recognizable look, but it is a shame that we don't get to see some of the other cool looking gear around.

PS - I was watching some clips to jog my memory...and had to pause because they were using pila as melee weapons. Sooooo....yeah.....
Well, read my spoiler from earlier, because it is pretty good.
