Saga Rate The Six George Lucas Films, Favorite to Least Favorite (poll added)

Sorry, it's a mood thing for me on any given day which element of which film I like best, so I can't differentiate between the Episodes, nor do I see dramatic differences in quality among them. Though, I did notice that I find myself checking out the PT more than the OT. Maybe it's because I find the deconstruction of the main protagonist into a villain psychologically somewhat more interesting than the classic hero's journey. It's a very ballsy move, one I believe has never been done with a franchise, especially one intended for kids/ teenagers.

Anyway, sorry for going all rebel on this rating thread.

Why? Because I recently watched the original 1977 unaltered version of A New Hope, and it was something magical about it. It was so awesome to see the real film for the first time, and not the Special Edition I grew up with... It was like a whole different movie. The editing was different, the interaction between the characters felt different, and the atmosphere felt different. Overall it was a better film experience. That's what made ANH top my list. Previously my list has always been topped by ESB, for which I guess I dont need any further explanation since it's most SW fans personal favourite anyway.
On third place I put AOTC because of Kamino, every scene with Jango Fett and Padmé in her white outift. Then ROTJ on fourth place since I consider it to be the weakest in the old trilogy, but its still a nice movie to watch then and then. Then I put The Phantom Menace at fifth place because it's quite stupid and boring, the only good thing being the Bongo scene and pod racing sequence (and thanks to TPM we got Aurra Sing and Quinlan Vos, two amazing EU characters). Lastly I put ROTS at last place because it's REALLY stupid and REALLY boring. Even though the opera scene with Palpatine and Anakin is probably one of the best scenes in the entire saga, it's still not enough to save the rest of the movie which is mostly just dull CGI crap.

1. VI—Big space battles and epic lightsaber fights make me nerd out.
2. V—Big ground battles also make me nerd out.
3. IV—Space battles, nerd out, etc.
4. III—Clearly the best of the PT, IMO.
5. I—Not as bad as everyone says. Although I'm holding out for JJ to fry Jar-Jar in the ST.
6. II—You could almost palpably feel the crew trying their hardest to rise above Lucas' poor writing and direction, but to little avail.

Return of the Jedi and Attack of the Clones was a hard one. I think there's some bad decisions in the directing and the acting in both movies, but probably just more in AOTC. The love story in Clones isn't well handled in a lot of places but I do love the part of where Padme follows Anakin to Tatooine and I think it's some of the strongest stuff in the movie and the saga. In Jedi Han Solo being lame and useless, Leia not really being herself, a second Death Star showing up and the Ewoks almost completely tarnish that movie, but the Luke/Vader/Emperor stuff is some of the finest drama in the saga and the swashbuckling pirate battle over the Pit of Carkoon is awesome, so I'll go with Jedi over Clones.

Yeah The Phantom Menace is my favorite of the Prequels, part of that is largely due to childhood nostalgia and other part is I really like the state the galaxy is presented as in the film. Peaceful and non-warlike. Plus the podrace I have full on blind nostalgia goggles for! OH yeah Qui-Gon Jinn. Star Wars needs more Qui-Gon. Attack of the Clones has a great story with Obi-Wan's detective work and the battle of Geonosis is great, but the romance plot is awful and hurts the film in my eyes. Revenge of the Sith I have several issues with, from beginning to end, so many things that just seemed....I guess wrong is the word to use. More dislikes than likes I think...the novel is far more enjoyable. Return of the Jedi I have over the great A New Hope because LUKE FORCING SKYWALKER is just so great in the film it caused Luke to became my favorite character of the movies, maybe even overall! Best Jedi ever? I think so.

 

I simply think fandom is a more exciting place when those with less popular views speak up and proudly declare their tastes. I wouldn't say there's anything truly "special" about it, more like a breath of fresh air or a nice change of pace.

but if you add in the added context in from Cloak of Deception and parts of Darth Plagueis I'd switch around PM and AOTC

 

Empire - has always been my favorite since I was a kid. I loved Hoth. I loved the Luke/Vader battle. The reveal. Boba Fett. The fact it ended with the bad guys winning which was not something I remember seeing before at that point.

Rots - I really like the action. Also I was older when this came out as probably had more build up than any movie I had ever been waiting to see. I felt it delivered even though we knew the ending.

Return of the Jedi is my number one because two scenes in particular have had a profound effect on my life. There is much I do not like about ROTJ, but those scenes make it worth it.
