ST STAR WARS: EPISODE VII CAST ANNOUNCED

Billing in the press releases (even the one announcing Gwendoline Christie and Lupita Nyong'o.) And Variety said that the part he was up for was the lead before he got it, and some twitter stuff.

 

Yeah about most articles say he's either the star or the lead of the movie. I haven't seen any that claim Ridley is the main lead. It seems to be only wishful thinking by fans that have seen the Hunger Games and want JJ to copy the idea. Not every movie now needs a female front and center just because it worked in Hunger Games.

 

I wasn't targeting you specifically, I'm was just telling Momotaros one reason why you will see people put Ridley before Boyega and I have the same opinion as you, I actually think that Boyega is playing the Obi Wan/Han of this new trilogy (but I wouldn't be disappointed/shocked if Boyega is the main lead).

 

Yeah, I think Boyega is probably central protagonist. Daisy is probably the co lead with comparable screen time. Gleeson/Isaac is your tertiary lead. My bet is Gleeson playing Luke's son who is NOT the central character.

I think the main focus is split with Boyega/Ridley and Gleeson rounding it out. Gleeson is probably the "Han stand in"; although I don't think his character is anything like Solo.

Boyega has the advantage of being a genuine name (Attack the Block) unlike Ridley. They were cast as a pair, IMHO, and it'll still be Ridley's character driving the plot.

 

Based on what? Thier no evidence that she the main person at all.

This will be the litmus. If she is already a Jedi, then she will not be the main.

I think Ridley will drive a subplot. I think Boyega will be narrative frame to which the story moves.

Honestly, this is all just petty nonsense. All your leads will have their moments; they will all get their times to shine. If everyone's thinking that your next trio is going to have a total Luke equivalency character; I think your going to be disappointed. I don't think it will play out like that at all.

 

I'm not sure I've seen anyone "defending a female character's right to be 'over the top' or 'too bad ass.'" Could you post a quote or two? I think most of us here hope that the new characters are balanced, but I'm sure there are going to be some nifty lightsaber duels and dogfights, and it'd be nice if some of them involved women.

I think those people are hoping to see a female character as physically badass as, say, Darth Maul or Mace Windu, both of whom kicked a certain amount of ass. Leia is awesome, and gets her licks in, but she and Padme are both princess types at heart. They're not exactly combat specialists. In six movies, we haven't seen ace fighter pilots who are also women, or badass Jedi who are also women, except in the background. It'd be nice to see (outside of Clone Wars).

I don't recall anyone rooting for nonstop somersaults, but I'll be very surprised if there aren't some athletic Jedi duels going on. Not to "prove something", but because it's Star Wars.

The rumor also suggests that Boyega will be pkaying a jedi? Does that mean he will not be a main?

 

Young Jedi. Meaning he might be a padwan. Under the training of Luke or another Jedi.

That's the thing. People already jumping the gun that she's the main star with zero evidence to support it. Shoot for all we know Gleeson could be the main star.

I'm not sure about that. Oh I think he will play a jedi when its all said and done. But I have a feeling he is going to be introduced as some sort of pilot or young soldier.

 

I mean at this point we can only go with what's reported, or guess.

I say see if she's a Jedi from the start because I believe that the heroes journey will be reprised again.

The main character will be a force adapt, but untrained.

 

Not disagring with you that he might start out none Jedi. I mean if the casting breakdown we saw months ago is still in effect. He might be coming from the streets with no knowledge of the force at all.

 

But isn't that a bit too much like Ezra from Rebels.

 

I don't believe Ridley will be a Jedi in Ep7. If you think about it, the best way to set the film up is that after ROTJ, things didn't go as planned for Luke and the Jedi Order has not yet been re-established and it'll take the three movies for Ridley, Gleeson and Boyega to bring Jedi back to the galaxy.

 

Lloyd and Christensen got billed fourth and third in the prequels, and they were the main character of the prequels. It's often more indicative of who the bigger name star and who has the more powerful agency behind them, as cast billing is negotiated. Ridley is a nobody who belongs to a nobody agency. Mia Wasikowska took a back seat to the bigger names in Alice as well if you look at the posters and trailer for the film.

 

I don't think he is some sort of street urchin. Perhaps a republic soldier who has being assigned as a bodyguard to Ridely? Perhaps they initially hate each other?

 

It will mirror's Luke's own journey. If not only for JJ's attempt to draw inspiration chiefly from the first films.
