I'm not necessarily hoping for a battle opening. By "anti-climactic," I meant showing all the old heroes together at the very beginning. People are looking forward to seeing them again. Doing it this way would kill the anticipation. They should be re-introduced uniquely and logically with the new story. Not paraded up front.

I see your point, but most of us will know the story before hand because of spoilers .and we'll know when the old gang will be popping up approximately during the film.

The last movie released (3) began with a big space battle. Perhaps this makes it unlikely for them to go this way again

I agree. It might be a meeting of villains, that introduces who or what the heroes could be facing.

It has to be remenicent of the opening shot of "A New Hope" but more exciting!

Perhaps a small unknown ship (Which holds the Solo twins) is being hunted down by an updated Star Destroyer and the twins ship gets caught in the tractor Beam. Then Out of Hyper-Space comes the Falcon. With Chewie and Han firing away as Lando Pilots the ship.

Han: "Aim at the tractor Beam Chewie"
    Chewie: " Aaaaaaarrrgggggg!"

Some Blue Skined Admiral (Played by Comberbatch) Stares out of the Command Window of the Star Destroyer.

"Its them! Its the Falcon!, Just like we planned!" "Captain, send out the first Wave!"

15 revised Tie Fighters stream out of the Star Destroyer and Attack the The Falcon!

***Boom*** The Tractor Beam Explodes, and the Twins ship breaks free.

Han: "Jacen, get the hell out of here!"

Jacen: "Dad, What the hell are you doing here!"

Han: "We don't have time for this now boy, get out of here now!"

    Boom:

    Chewie: "Aaaaaarrrrrrrgggggg"

Lando: "We Lost our Shields...It not my fault!"

Han: Jumps out of his seat and runs towards the Cockpit. "Chewie keep them busy!"

Lando: " Han, Its not my fault!"

    Han: " It never is!"

Admiral: "Lock onto the disabled ship with the secondary tractor unit."

Jacen: " Dad, the engines are overheated! They've locked onto us again!!!"

Han: "Not if I can help it:"

Han; Turns the Ship Around and head straight towards the Tractor Beam!

Lando: " Han, Han, HAN, you not going to ram it, are you?"

Han: " Its my kids Lando, I don't have a choice!, Hit the auxilary Power!"

The Falcons engines flash and pick up speed towards the Destroyer,

Admiral: " All Batteries, target the incoming ship!"

A barrage of lasers streak out of the destoryer towards the incoming Falcon. Lando and Chewie starts screaming and At the last second Han manuvers the ship downwards sending 3 persuing Tie Fighters into the Destoryer's Tractor Beam. There's A hugh explosion on the Star Destroyer! The Bridge gets rocked.

    Jacen: "Dad, We're free!!'

    Han: "Jacen, punch it now!"

The Smaller ship jumps into hyperspace and the Falcon follows soon after!

Some Cadet on the Bridge: "Admiral, Both Ships have jumped into Hyperspace!"

Admiral: sighs "Disappointing!...... Captain, Change course. Direct the fleet towards Carida!"

They switch it up and go back to when the second Death star is being attacked, A younger Sydow's standing on the bridge of a star destroyer watching from a distance, With the ships power offline, Bridge is dark, Lying in wait. Then as the Death star explodes it lights his eyes and a smile creeps across his face.

    With this playing in background.

I think the opening should set the scene for whoever is going to be the villain of the film.

Mark me down in the "villain opening" category. One, it's traditional in the OT. Two, you gotta provide for the people who won't have watched any Star Wars since ROTJ. You can show them the original Big 3 and they'll know who they are. You can show them the new Big 3 and they'll accept them as cool new action heroes. But, I mean, the last thing these people saw, the good guys won, the bad guys are dead, stuff is blowing up, everyone is cheering -- sure, we'll be fascinated to see what becomes of the Rebellion even if there's little shooting, but these people aren't interested in Bothans or Mon Mothma. They need to know why they should still care, and for them, the movie hasn't really started until there's conflict.

It could be a meeting, though that might give away too much. It could be the villains destroying some overmatched good guys, or "assemble the fleet" starship porn. But I think it definitely will and should introduce an important villain, putting us on notice that the characters we care about are in danger.

I had in mind the villains killing a jedi maybe, thats if the baddies of the film are going to be sith lead that is.

I'd much prefer something a little darker at the start to introduce us to the threat, over them shooting their bolt early by being eager to show us what Luke, Leia and Han are doing. Maybe Han id sitting on the porch in a rocking chair playing chess with Chewie, whilst Leia is knitting a scarf for Luke, whos busy building a full scale shuttle Tydirium out of matchsticks in his bedroom.

    Theory for opening sequence...

After the scroll text fades - our POV pivots up or down. A small Imperial starship (likely akin to a Corellian Corvette) is in orbit of a planet with connections to the Dark Side of the Force. Suddenly a New Galactic Republic starship (perhaps a Star Destroyer...something big) pops into view from hyperspace. The Republic starship disables the smaller Imperial ship. A Republic security detail boards the Imperial vessel and finds it abandoned and they report this to the Republic ship's commanding officer. On the Republic vessel's bridge the Jedi Knight (perhaps Han and Leia's son) leading the mission senses danger...but too late. The smaller Imperial ship explodes. The Jedi Knight and Republic officers determine that the former Imperial Inquisitor they were chasing likely is already on the planet below. The Jedi Knight will lead a security team planet-side. Meanwhile on the planet the former Imperial Inquisitor watches his troops blunder into Sith Lord booby-traps. The former Imperial Inquisitor is after a key 'McGuffin' that will lead to a Sith Lord treasure (or perhaps the Mortis Monument). The former Imperial Inquisitor succeeds in taking the treasure just as the Jedi Knight and the Republic security detail arrives. The former Imperial Inquisitor unleahes new found Dark Side abilities (conjuring up the 'Brother Of The Dark'). The 'BOTD' takes over the body of the Jedi Knight. The former Imperial Inquisitor bows before the 'BOTD' (now in the form of the Jedi Knight). Meanwhile on the planet Coruscant - Chancellor Leia Solo feels a great disturbance in the Force...but she can not determine its cause or elements. She contacts her brother on Tatooine. There Luke has established a branch of the decentralized Jedi Temple (Jabba's old palace was refitted into a Jedi facility). Leia asks Luke about the Force disturbance. He too felt it, but also can not say much about it.
    (more to come...if time permits)

Scrap that first attempt I did not too long ago...

Star Wars Episode VII : The Ancient Fear (or The Justice Crusade)

    Roll the scroll

A small capital starship (on par with a Corellian Corvette) with Imperial symbols on it rushes past our POV. Pulling back we see a larger starship (might be a new Star Destroyer design) baring the symbol of the New Galactic Republic giving chase. Several one-pilot O-wing starfighters intercept the battered Imperial starship. On the command bridge of the Republic ship a Jedi Knight (Han and Leia's 25 year old son) gives orders to disable the Imperials only. They must be brought to court. The O-wings accomplish their task. The Imperial ship slows and drifts after her engine section is ionized. Back on the Republic ship's bridge a junior officer asks if they should board the Imperial ship. The Jedi Knight senses danger in that notion...and a beat later is correct. The Imperial ship explodes. Mission accomplished? The Jedi Knight senses not. Something very wrong and cold is happening on the nearby planet. A planet known for its connection to the dark-side. The Jedi Knight orders a security detail for ground assault. On the planet a former Imperial Inquisitor-turned-war-criminal leads the latest iteration of Imperial troopers into a Sith Temple. The Inquisitor watches as his troopers die in clever booby-traps. Eventually the Inquisitor reaches his goal. The 'McGuffin' is a Sith amulet that helps enhance Force powers. But more importantly it helps conjure up something far older than the Sith Lords and Jedi Knights. Enter the One known as the 'Brother-Of-The-Dark' (last seen in the Clone Wars tv show). The Inquisitor bows before the One. Suddenly the Jedi Knight and a Republic assault team storm into the Sith Temple. A firefight erupts. The 'BOTD' kills the Republic assault team. The Jedi Knight rushes to confront the 'BOTD' and Inquisitor. The Jedi Knight kills the Inquisitor. The 'BOTD' unleashes on the Jedi Knight and stuns him. The 'BOTD' takes over the body of the Jedi Knight. Next the 'BOTD' resurrects the dead troops and Inquisitor. The disguised 'BOTD' signals the Republic ship above. The mission is accomplished. Meanwhile on the planet Naboo the Force disturbance is felt by Chancellor Leia Solo. She has been invited to be the honorary queen there in memory of her late mother. Han notices Leia's distress. She knows something is very wrong, but it is not clear enough to her. Maybe Luke will have a better feel for what has happened. They contact Luke on planet Tatooine. Luke refitted Jabba's old palace into a branch of the decentralized Jedi Temple. Luke too is baffled by the Force storm. An investigation is needed. Every Jedi Knight needs to be aware that something very wrong is afoot. The thirty year Balance achieved by Anakin Skywalker is now lost...

    More you say (big grin)...
...Meanwhile the son of Luke Skywalker is on a spying mission for the Jedi Order. He and R2 are gathering evidence against the Hutts, Mandalorian 'Deathwatch' terrorists and a former Imperial faction. He learns that this 'axis of evil' calls itself the 'Triad Union'. One of the Mandalorian 'Deathwatch' terrorists spots him and attacks. It appears to be Boba Fett. How was the old bounty hunter able to sneak up on Luke's son? Instead of using the Force to counter attack Luke's son uses the Force to rip away Fett's helmet. Instead of the old hunter's face a beautiful young lady wears Fett's armor. Luke's son hesitates too long. He is stunned. R2 hides and sends an SOS to the Jedi Order. Luke's son is taken prisoner. The other grandson of Anakin Skywalker arrives to see his younger cousin taken prisoner. The 'BOTD' senses more power in the younger man and takes him over instead. Han and Leia's son is now the prisoner instead. The 'BOTD' in the form of Luke's son uses the boy's attraction to the female Mandalorian wearing Fett's gear. We learn she is the daughter of Fett and a female Imperial Inquisitor. Fett's daughter is the owner of the darksaber. Meanwhile R2's SOS is read by Luke and he puts together a small team of Jedi Knights. The plan is to infiltrate the 'Triad Union' and rescue Luke's son. Luke realizes that a military measure is too much. Instead he and his Jedi 'hire' Han Solo to sneak them into the 'Triad Union'. The Falcon has been outfitted with a device that makes her look like some other less famous starship. Han, Luke and the Jedi team manage to get into 'Trade Union' space. They discover that the 'Triad Union' has Death Star tech. The rescue of a son now is secondary. Depriving the 'Triad Union' of Death Star tech becomes paramount. With some trouble our heroes do find Luke's son. Luke's son has a 'prisoner' (Fett's daughter). Luke's son lies and tells Luke that his cousin is some sort of darksider. Han protests that notion. They decide to split up. Luke, his son and Fett's daughter will sabotage the 'Triad Union's Death Star reactor. While Han and the Jedi team will locate Han's son. Whoever accomplishes their mission first will then contact Leia and have her dispatch the Republic Starfleet.

I have no thoughts as to how the movie should open, except for one thing. The movies all open up with a shot of a spaceship flying by, so it would be neat if the movie starts with the Millenium Falcon :)

I would like it to begin with the camera panning to Corellia. Then the Millenium Falcon flies over head, like the Star Destroyer flying over Tatooine, heading to Corellia. Then cut to Han Solo and Chewbacca in the cockpit. The Milleniun Falcon, Han Solo, and his home planet Corellia, that we finally get to see for the first time; all together at once. Maybe Han Solo could be there to get some parts for the Falcon(the Iconic Corellian ship, so old that the only place to find parts is on the planet where it was built). Right after Han and Chewie land; there are some explosions. The baddies first big strike against the New Republic. Of course this may be to similar the AOTC's beginning, but it would be a great way to start the ST. The baddies first attack on the major ship building planet in the Galaxy.

The opening scene will not be ON Tatooine... as that is not Star Wars... it will absolutely be in orbit of some planet be it Tatooine or otherwise.

The big question in my mind, after the opening crawl... is the camera going to pan up or down? ;)

The opening scene will be a recreation of ANH, only this time instead of a Star Destroyer chasing a rebel Blockade Runner, it will be Boba Fett in Slave I chasing the OT3 in the Millennium Falcon.

I want a villain of Episode 7 or a hint of the villain of the Sequel trilogy as opening scene, possibly on Tatooine.

Since it's been so long since we have seen these characters, a quieter opening would be nice.

Though for Episode 8, I want an opening as incredible as this one.

Man that opening never gets old! [face_hypnotized] ^:)^

i think the camera will pan down to naboo. then we will see a 100 year old jarjar teaching at the newly formed naboo/gungan learning center. he will then start telling the tale of ep. 7. the film will be told entirely in flashback from jarjar's perspective. kinda like hearing morgan freeman's voice in shawshank redemption but with jarjar narrating.

One of the ways that SW is well written is the pacing with which major characters are introduced. For example, it takes a while before we see Luke in ANH and Anakin in TPM. I hope the story introduces the main characters bit by bit as they are needed to the over all narrative.

Also I think the opening scene will depend on the set-up - ie: the opening crawl. As such, logically I believe that speculation on the opening scene is determined by what people think the set up will be (eg: ANH Leia's mission, or the Jedi's mission in TPM).

Yeah something like that. What we have to understand is, most likely the audience will be filled with people who have never seen star wars before. ROTJ is 30 years old. The last star wars movie is 10 years old, and the last season of clone wars already aired. Of course there will be millions of nostalgic movie goers who will squee a the sight of Luke Beardgrower, but there will be millions of movie goers who will need a very good reason to care about some old guy.

One of the reasons why that film was so damn good across the board... it had such an epic opening, and just put the consequences of what was going to happen into such a large scale right off the bat...

I don't think the first movie of the new trilogy should open that epic... save the next super epic start for the 3rd of the new trilogy... build up to it! Start small, 1 ship vs 1 ship. ;)
