I was listening to this press conference where they said they detected pings in the water consistent with those that would come from the black boxes. So after weeks and weeks of finding absolutely nothing in the way of debris, they decide to drop in the hydrophones as a last-ditch attempt to find something and they just happened to pick something up? And just when the batteries are projected to expire? Supposedly the detection range on the pings is a measly two miles...so talk about some incredibly dumb luck. Or, maybe it's not luck...maybe there's some kind of conspiracy going on... >_>

 

I imagine they only listen for the pings when they think they've reasonably narrowed the search down, which seems to have been the case here. Like you said: the detection range on the pings is very limited, so it would be a waste to listen for them until they had a good idea of where to listen.

 

That's the thing, they didn't narrow it down. There was no debris, and therefore nothing to go on. The way it's normally supposed to go is: find debris, then listen for pings, then go in with the underwater drones. Except despite skipping to the second step they still managed to find something, which is what seems incredulous.

 

Malaysian Airlines lost another plane, according to ABC News. This time over the Ukrainian border.

My thoughts are with the families of everyone on board. This certainly isn't something anyone in Ukraine needs right now either.

Wow. It's another 777 too. Although I'm reading reports suggesting it may have been shot down. What a coincidence that would be, but just, wow.

For God's sake, let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of KAL 007 and IR 655.

 

Yeah, I can't fault MH for this -- it is definitely sounding like the plane was shot down. If so, this just continues a long, long line of Russians shooting down commercial airliners (though, in fairness, this was the first in nearly 30 years by actual Russian troops (not including Georgia or the Ukraine).

1940 (Finnish), 1970 (Korean), 1983 (Korean) and then 1993 (Georgians shooting down Georgians x 3) and then 2001 (Ukraine shooting down a Siberian flight.

 

Still watching the ABC News coverage (too lazy to switch channels), apparently other airlines are now changing their flight plans to avoid going over the area where the plane was shot down.

The most probable suspect right now are Russian separatists.

 

Good. I sure as heck would be.

My best guess at this point is that it was separatists using Russian hardware.

 

New theory: CNN shot down the plane in order to have a new Malaysia Airlines story.

 

Well, this is a weird coincidence.

by the time I turn on the tv tonight this should all be sorted out and have circled back to "Putin is a madman" and "Obama is weak on foreign policy."
