Lightsaber skills are supposed to be the sole determination on how strong someone is with the Force?

    1. Darth Sidious
    2. Yoda
    3. Mace Windu
    4. Anakin Skywalker
    5. Count Dooku
    6. Luke Skywalker
    7. Obi-Wan Kenobi
    8. Darth Maul
    9. Qui-Gon Jinn
All the background Jedi go behind Obi-Wan at the highest, by ROTJ he was clearly Yoda and Windu's go-to Jedi Master for all the most dangerous missions.

So, I made a few changes to my previous list:
    1. Darth Sidius/Palpatine
    2. Yoda (PT)
    3. Darth Vader (OT)
    4. Mace Windu
    5. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (RotS)
    6. Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus
    7. Obi-Wan Kenobi (AotC/RotS)
    8. Luke Skywalker (RotJ)
    9. Darth Maul
    10. Qui-Gon Jinn
    11. Obi-Wan Kenobi (TPM)
    12. Anakin Skywalker (AotC)
    13. Obi-Wan Kenobi (ANH)
    14. Yoda (OT)
    15. Luke Skywalker (TESB)
    A few notes:
    • In TPM: Obi-Wan defeated Darth Maul with luck, and a surprise attack, not because he was stronger.
    • In AotC: I have Padawan Obi-Wan (TPM) above Padawan Anakin, simply because Obi-Wan became a Jedi Knight in the end of the movie, while Anakin didn't.
    • In RotS: While Anakin was more powerful than Obi-Wan, he made stupid decisions during their fight because he was blinder from his anger, which is why he lost. Yoda fled because he realized that he couldn't beat Sidius.
    • In ANH: Obi-Wan has obviously grown much weaker & slower than he was in his prime, presumably due to the lack of his training.
    • In TESB: Yoda has grown very old, so I don't think he can even fight against a Jedi. But I'm sure he still has the strength to beat an inexperienced Padawan like Luke.
    • In RotJ: Luke defeated Vader, but this happened because Vader was caught by surprise by Luke, who was also using the dark side. Normally, I don't think Luke has surpassed the war-experienced Jedi.

Darth Nihilus. He was a wound in the Force itself and killed by sucking the Force out of his victims. He took out an entire Jedi enclave without ever drawing his saber. Then Darth Revan, after returning to the Light Side of the Force, killed Nihilus in a duel. Sadly, these guys are both reduced to legends now.

When I think powerful in the force I don't really consider lightsaber ability, but force power ability. From what we see in the movies I think it shows Yoda is very clearly the most powerful, with Palpatine a close second. Dooku would be third on my list. Followed then by Mace, Obi-Wan, and Anakin. Anakin might have the potential, but he never comes close to reaching it. He is only on par with Obi-Wan, which is shown when they both try to force push each other at the same time.

Luke in the movies never has more than a very fundamental understanding of the force. His training is very raw. It is mostly just a crash course. It was enough for what he needed to do, and no more. He was able to defeat Palpatine because he was able to manipulate his father with words, not the force. In all likelihood Darth Maul was more powerful than Luke at any point in the movies.

The fact that Anakin credits Obi Wan with being as wise as master yoda and as powerful as master windu shows that Obi Wan is one of the most powerful Jedi. I would say that Darth Maul had the potential but was never going to be long term. Vader is the most powerful Sith.

Maybe, but I don't think Sidious had any plans for Maul to be anything more than an assassin. Probably would have ended up being one of the most skilled lightsaber duelist, but force ability I don't think he had it in him.

Darth Sidious was the most powerful Sith Lord in the entire saga. There's a reason that Sidious was the Master and Vader was the Apprentice.

Grandmaster Luke Skywalker is the most powerful jedi by canon
Sidious is the most powerful sith by canon

None of the above is up for debate the way I see it. They have the feats and statements from G-canon sources to back it up.

You mean in the new canon right? Cause there are several comics after ROTJ and he does so many things that makes Yoda look like a baby. XD

*whispers* pssst...the EU was never considered canon.

Back to the topic at hand:

    1. Palpatine
    2. Yoda
    3. Anakin/Darth Vader
    4. Maul
    5. Obi-Wan

    1. Palpatine and Yoda
    2. Anakin/Vader (would have been #1 if he hadn't had his limbs cut off before reaching his full potential).
    3. Windu.
    4. Dooku
    5. Obi-Wan.

Luke in the movies wasn't as strong as these guys, but I assume once he was older/more experienced he would rise to the top of the list. Similarly, Leia never learned to use the Force in the movies, but I assume she has the same potential as Luke and could be equally powerful.

    Since when?! lol
I'm pretty sure Lucas himself said that Luke went on to be what Anakin could have been.
