WSJ: You’ve shot your movies on film even though they’re full of effects and, essentially, digital creations.
Abrams: Especially on movies like “Star Trek” and “Star Wars,” you have so much that will be created or extended digitally, and it’s a slippery slope where you can get lost in a world of synthetic. You really have to keep away from that, especially with “Star Wars,” which I wanted very much to feel like it is part of another era.

Someone on the originaltrilogy.com forums posted a frame from the teaser. Showing the stormtrooper armor turning white when they're about to go down the ramp. Meaning that it's probably the lighting in the ship itself that's causing the blue tint.

Yes I've seen this. It's really a great shot as a still. Most importantly : Real people in real costumes. I hope JJ keeps the modern camera work moderate then this could really be awesome.

I would be OK with this if it were the introduction of the stormtroopers, the first time we see them in the film. Instead of seeing them as a threat coming to get us, see what it's like being them. Since apparently a major, non-antagonistic character is a stormtrooper (bold choice, by the way), that would work. Provided we get no other shakycam afterwards, of course. Once is enough for the entire trilogy.

Offtopic, but does anyone else think those troops are being deployed in Coruscant, not Tatooine? The weather reminds me of ROTS, and there appears to be tall structures with large balconies.

I do have a real hard time imagining they're going to walk out of there to burn down a Tatooine village. It looks industrial to me. Also, they look like they're ready to face serious opposition and that the timing of their strike must be a very specific one as they're being deployed in what looks like bad conditions. It doesn't look like they're on a mission to massacre civilians.

Funny thing, to my eyes this looks desaturated and as if it'd been put through a red filter. In fact, the original coloration kind of reminded me of the extremely bright colors we got from the technicolor era.

The colours of the X-Wing pilot and his cockpit do kind of bug me though. He looks as if he's lit by a bunch of supermarket flourescent lights.

They look more like stormtroopers from EP4 now awesome. Now that what was so off putting about the trailer it just looked weird.

Looks really good! However, I do think the colour in the trailer is that way because of the lighting in the transport.

Except the producer in this case is Kathleen Kennedy, who hasn't exactly been shown to work that way.

You don't hire someone like Abrams and then not let him make it his own film. I can't imagine Kennedy forcing his hand, least of all on the color.

    That clearly is the case.

However, why should we let common sense get in the way of kneejerk accusations.

The DVDs and/or BluRays are very color graded, btw. Especially Hoth. All the snow looks blue. And the metal used on Star Destroyers and TIE fighters look like a metalic blue instead of grey.

Don't. This is about the blue tint of the film.

Why was the color grading changed with each new release?

I think that the blue tinge is a result of the colors of faded film reals being amplified without being re-tinted.
