It'll take about 2 years before we find out for sure if this pans out or not.. we'll have forgotten about this tweet by then.

Maybe they are waiting to see the reaction to VII to confirm. [face_devil]

Can't say this is far fetched. However, considering they haven't been looking at many directors for Episode 9 yet, of course JJ would be considered. If there are only, say, 3 directors in the current running for a movie coming out in 4 years, all of them are front runners. If JJ is in that list and he's already doing TFA, that puts him on top of the list.

But does HE want to do it? Let's get Episode 7 done first.

it won't be as bad as this mystery box which we know absolutely nothing about the plot or characters and the state of the galaxy. AT least in the wait for 9 we'll know who's who.

"Educated speculation" is what I think that is.

    By educated I mean look at the timeline;
JJ finishes TFA and appears at premiers, promotional work, etc. and at the same time RJ can start work on EPVIII.
RJ continues to work on EPVIII while JJ has a break, does something else, whatever (you get the jist)
RJ finishes EPVIII and appears at premiers, promotional work, etc. and at the same time JJ can start work on EPIX.

On the Disney release schedule it's not feasible to have the same director for all 3 and El Maybe has concocted this. Maybe. ;)

El Mayembe earned his title of El 'Maybe' for good reasons.

I don't see why J.J. wouldn't be the frontrunner, if Disney loved his job with TFA enough, but still... wagon of salt needed with that site in my opinion.

I'd prefer to see Brad Bird for Episode IX to be honest. He backed off from Episode VII even though he was (probably) the first one on Kennedy's list in favor of Tomorrowland so maybe - fingers crossed - he'll be available for the final episode of ST!

I'd rather have a different director for each film. I won't hate it if it happens but I'd like to see someone new.

I seriously hope not, I'm hoping for an OT way, different director for each chapter in the ST.:D
    and I don't want a mystery box 2.0.[face_not_talking][face_shame_on_you]

Mistery Box will always exist... I mean what is that anyway... keeping your production tight and secret? (Almost) everybody does it.

If they think he did a great job on VII I don't see why they wouldn't consider him ending the trilogy he started. As a director not a writer.

This is completely totally shocking unexpected news! that...

Oh wait a minute many of us were talking of this as being possible a long time ago.

It might happen it might not but to me he was always the most likely candidate until we are otherwise notified.

So basically he can take couple of months vacation after TFA comes out and then start on IX presumably due 3.5 years after VII in May 2019.

Not really. Even Singer, who gives you regular updates via instagram/twitter... or Ayer recently with Suicide Squad... at the end of the day give you nothing substantial. Pre-alpha phase at best. Everybody runs their own mistery box the best they can, because there's a certain schedule that everyone needs to follow, that's how marketing works (see Snyder with BvS etc). It's a huge machinery and naturally, when stakes are higher big directors tend to drop the curtain for certain amount of time.
