No, having all those superheroes on screen fighting together wasn't the only reason, but it was certainly one of the biggest reasons or maybe even THE biggest reason.

No one will ever convince me that The Avengers is better than the prequels, let alone holds a candle to them.

You are talking to a guy who has literally been laughed at for admitting he thinks the prequels were better than Avengers. (it was at a party where a bunch of guys were talking movies). They know I like the prequels, so when I told them I thought Avengers was overrated, it became "so you think the prequels are better than Avengers?!?!".

I stood up for them proudly, so no way I am being convinced otherwise

I like The Avengers, but I do think that, as a film, it is painfully overrated. I think one of the drawbacks was Wheden's direction, actually. He comes from television and, at times, The Avengers really did look like a TV movie.

    Why not David Lynch/Cronenberg/Fincher?

Coulson's death in The Avengers made more of an impact on me than Padme's death in ROTS. And I think I was supposed to be more saddened by hers than his.

Hell to be blunt, the worst of the MCU has still been infinitely better than the PT at its best. Yes, even Iron Man 2.

I love how not fully appreciating Whedon automatically means, to many in the geek world, that you're sitting on some impossibly high horse. Some people don't worship at his altar, and that's no crime. To me, his films have been all verbal style, and not much visual style or narrative substance. The only thing I like about him is that he seems to treat females as human beings, which is refreshing in a geek culture that has long objectified women.

Yes, I think the biggest strength of The Avengers was definitely the banter between the team. He's good at things like that. Visually, however, it is an incredibly dull film and I think that's down to his background in television. I hope Age of Ultron is an improvement.

I agree. I like the Avengers, and most of the other Marvel films, but I think they're all overrated. The PT is indeed better.

I like Whedon and I think he'd make a pretty cool Star Wars movie, but I don't think it's going to happen. Pretty sure he said that he declined the next two Avengers films because he's exhausted and burned-out of making these huge Hollywood movies. I bet he'll still be the target for a lot of Star Wars rumors, however.

As far as Lawrence goes...he doesn't really fit the profile of what LFL seems to be looking for. I doubt they're seriously considering him for the gig, beyond some very preliminary talks. They're probably reaching-out to all sorts of directors for purely informational purposes, like "What do you think about Star Wars? How would you do it? Would you even be interested in directing one?" type of stuff. I know the Bond franchise has done this in the past.

And when it comes to JJ directing Ep9, for me I would still like to see how he delivers on TFA first. I'm sure he's doing a great job, and the folks at Disney seem to be very pleased with what they've seen so far, so it makes perfect sense that they would want him back. I think the big question will continue be whether or not JJ himself wants to return.

Yup. And as someone who highly values the visual language of film, I just can't get interested in his films, beyond laughing at the occasionally fun dialogue. But even there, I find he winks at the audience far too much. I would like him a lot more if he directed straight camp films, like Army of Darkness. It's the mix of camp and drama that I find off-putting.

And based on the trailers, you shouldn't expect anything dramatically different. If you didn't drool over the first Avengers, you won't drool over this one. Unless you fall asleep watching it on a plane... :)

    Honestly, this makes no sense.

I, for one, am not trying to.
It doesn't sound to me like a very nice party where people are laughing at other guests. As a fan of both Star Wars and Marvel, I'd have happily taken them on, shown them up to be jerks who didn't know what they were talking about in regards either franchise as they mumbled and shifted uncomfortably and moved on to get more cake as the tall skinny one flicked me the bird behind my back.

Dude, what TV shows are you looking at?o_O

Nobody was praying at an altar and if you looked at the posts fairly, you'll see that it had nothing to "not fully appreciating Whedon automatically".

He has a couple of years to recover ;)

Honestly, you get upset that someone cries "high horse", but yet you look down on others as simple "droolers" and "worshippers".

    I don't get it.

Who are this people who are overrating and underrating all these franchises?

    The Illuminati? The Lizard Men?[face_mischief]

I hope they don't go for Whedon. See, "Avengers" was great edited, dynamic told in the way it managed to tell each characters story, but content, the innersoul of the movie, felt rather empty. Visually, destruction porn all over again. Actually, the Russo brothers seems like a better fit, CA; The Winter Soldier had more substance plot-wise and the action was even sharper executed. There are lots of talent out there though and i think both Cuaron and Brad Bird fits Star Wars, although i will wait to watch Bird`s Tomorrowland first, to see if he can really transfer his great emotional animated stuff to live action.

Fincher, Lynch and Cronenberg in one? That would be great for a spin off! Fincher, with his relation to Lucasfilm and sci-fi, i believe he could pull off a great darker spin off film, and i would not count it out either. Lynch is too old now maybe, and have troubles with financing his films these days ( what a great CV he has though). Cronenberg is a favorite of mine, but sci-fi blockbusters is not his arena any longer, or it never have been. But late 80s he did great genre stuff like "The Fly" and "Dead Ringers".

I think Lucasfilm maybe has a list of 3, 4 directors for Episode 9. I think the door is open for JJ. Spielberg too, but then it should have happened 10, 15 years ago, don't think he would consider it now.

Excuse me? I didn't call anyone a "drooler," and even if I did, it would not have been derogatory. I proudly drool over the Star Wars OT, Lawrence of Arabia, Blade Runner, and a host of other favorite films. In any event, I said if you didn't drool over the first film, you won't drool over this one. I was addressing those who aren't huge fans of Avengers, not people who loved it. I have no problem with people who appreciate Whedon's films. Some of those people are my friends!

Someone who drools is a drooler ;)

However, I did misinterpret your intent, and got too testy about it. ;) Apologies. :)

The delay in response was because I had to go out earlier unexpectedly - I would have issued tis sooner if it had been possible ;)

:) I was kidding. And of course I accept your apology! Though I could have been more gracious, I suppose...

I just find it amusing how literally you interpret everything. Reminds me of my neighbor, who's one of my favorite people. She's a very funny, intelligent yet very literal-minded Bavarian. :)

I was only ribbing you - that was why I included the emoticons. ;)

It was connected to the early business - I was getting up on my "high horse" because I said sorry and you teased me :)

    It's all good.

EDIT: I don't take everything literally - I got it in the neck here a few weeks ago for not doing just that over quote from an actor (don't remember what it was) - but there was a reason I interpreted the "drool" the way I did but it is probably best not to go into that since we are getting along ;)

I like Joss Whedon doing what he's doing, which is making relatively safe films that are decent enough. He serves a valuable function in he keeping people like Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich away from franchises people actually care about.

For Star Wars, I'm more hoping they try and go with lesser-knowns that might bring something unexpected and new. It's far riskier but I'm okay with that. A just-okay Star Wars movie is a failure to me, where a just-okay comic movie or Terminator reboot is something I can live with. Rian Johnson and Gareth Edwards seem like the right sort of choices to push the envelope a little bit. Whether it works or not I don't know but I'll take the gamble.

I'd have no problem with Whedon doing one but I really don't think he'd be interested. As people have said, he seems to be more interesting in doing smaller films/original films.

He has said he wants a break after working on two Avengers movies and to work on other projects, but he based on past comments he would be interested.

IX is a few years away yet so he could be available.
