ST Laura Dern (Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo) in TLJ

Very intrigued by this news, and memories of her in Jurassic Park make me feel like she'll slot into Star Wars perfectly. What do we think her role will be? My predictable early theory is that she will be Luke's significant other, and quite possibly Rey's mother - i can imagine her playing a character who lost her daughter quite easily.

Too bad we did not get the video out of a different angle to see if there is a tombstone.

 

Am I the only one not seeing any mom resemblance at all? I feel like if they were casting for Rey's mom, they definitely could've found someone more resonant in appearance?

 

Well odds are that they cast Rey to look like her grandmother Padme. That would mean she got those looks through the genes she got from Luke. Therefore, Rey's mom doesn't have to have any specific look to her.

I don't see resemblance as such, but I don't think that's important so much as ability to play a certain type of character.when you think how well Laura Dern played essential;y the surrogate to the kids in JP, I think she'd be excellent at portraying someone who thought they'd lost a daughter forever - in fact, she kind of fits Leia's ROTJ description of her own mother far better than Natalie Portman...

 

I feel like she's going to be a senator or general or maybe just a fruit vendor.

Still, I'm delighted she's in the movie.

 

I feel similar - my guess in the other thread was member of the republic who the resistance form an alliance with.

You don't cast an actor with the name recognition and accolades that Dern has just to be a senator or resistance officer with a cameo. Same with Del Toro. I expect both to have key roles in the film. Del Toro likely will get a key villain role. Maybe he along with Snoke are the two big bads behind the whole First Order/ Knights of Ren.

Also for Dern, to be able to portray the ex-wife/former partner or flame of Luke and Rey's mom, would seem to be a very pivotal role fit for someone of Dern's stature.

Not necessarily: look at Del Toro's role as the collector in GOTG. Not exactly pivotal.

 

I remember when we thought Max Von Sydow was the arch villain.
In any case, a political or military role needn't be a mere cameo. I'm sure Dern won't be misused. At least I hope so.
And if she turns out to be Mara Jade, that's cool too.

I was just going to post has she ever donned red hair. We now have the answer. I would love her to be Mara But like everything else gone by we might as well throw that idea down the toilet,

 

I don't take Pablo's twitter that seriously, and she still might be a new character that is Rey's mom, but my gut's telling me to not expect her as Mara Jade.

 

Well, you can always say blonde hair and blue eyes would make it unlikely to be Rey's mum, but who knows.
