Census Best movie concerning artificial intelligence

Just watched Ex Machina. It's well up there.

 

I like that Ex Machina posits that the main indicator of AI is

the ability to be manipulative and deceptive.

Yes, self-awareness and all that, but the true marker of having something closely akin to human consciousness is the ability to lie and manipulate others. It's not really a horror story about AI; it's a horror story about humanity.

Though I'm one of the few people in the world that like's A.I.

 

Why ya gotta make me choose!??? Like DNAmy from Kim Possible says, "There's room in my heart for all of you!"

 

I thought that movie was horrible.

 

No Electric Dreams? For shame! This staple of 1980s HBO programming deserves more respect! Besides, you can't blame a computer for developing the hots for a young Virginia Madsen.

 

This was a hard one for me. It came down to Blade Runner and A.I. Blade Runner got my vote by the slimmest of margins.

 

It came down to Blade Runner vs. Terminator for me - the former took my vote because of my love of noir.

 

Terminator is also very noir.

 

I'm inclined to vote for The Matrix Trilogy, but I have to admit that HAL's characterization in 2001 is fascinating. I feel both fear and pity for him.

 

Aren't these all dystopias? Where are the utopias?

I voted fo Ex Machina in that the AI seemed less evil than the creators.

Her is kind of a mehtopia.

 

Ahem.

I, Robot

That is the film which most closely presented the future in continuity with the present world, blessed or burdened with a similar mix of societal highs and lows. The characters were also striking in their very grounded and relatable personalities. This is the film you are wishing for.

 

I thought Her was the most convincing view of a near future I've ever seen. Way more than I, Robot. The world was really well laid out and believably follows from our current trajectory. Idk if that makes it a mehtopia, since it's obviously neither a u- nor a dys-, but it doesn't seem all that meh either.

 

Blade Runner. None of the others that I've seen come remotely close.

 

I always saw it as a modern Frankenstein in that Frankenstein's "monster" in this case takes the form of the advancement of the computer processor which gets out of human control and turns against its creators.

 

I always viewed it as a slasher film.

 

Slasher film is too generic, especially for a film that has a very strong undercurrent of political commentary. Of course, my understanding of a slasher film is the Wes Craven style teen horror films.
