I'm a fan of the theory that Mikkelsen is playing a young Lor San Tekka. He and MVS are both Scandinavian after all... Gareth Edwards said that the "absence of Jedi is omnipresent" in Rogue One, and a theme in the movie is that the "gods are not coming to save us." Those themes sound perfectly suited to the character of Lor San Tekka, a "holy man" who believes in the ideals of the Jedi.

Jason Ward's recent post about Mikkelsen's character being a Robert Oppenheimer-type is also intriguing and could support the Lor San Tekka theory. After all, wasn't there a rumor that Von Sydow's character was a former Imperial? I could absolutely see this "Galen" character turning to the Jedi ideals after helping create such a devastating weapon as the Death Star and becoming a champion for peace and the light side of the Force.

As for the disparity between the names Lor San Tekka and Galen (if that's indeed his real name in the film), perhaps he changes his name when he joins (or creates) the Church of the Force, and Lor San Tekka is his "Jedi name" or something. And to stretch this theory even further... "San Tekka" could also be interpreted as "sans tech," which would be a fitting title for someone trying to repent for the technological terror they've created...

Maybe Tagge (or should I say "Taggi", Lt. Hija?) suspects that the designer deliberately built in a flaw and that's why he's so afraid while Motti, having personally executed the designer, thinks he's dealt with the problem.

Thank you Lt. Hija for this idea.

I'd like to believe I research by the rules of George Lucas Canon according to which the actual films are absolute or first rate canon. IMHO, this inevitably includes the spelling of character names, and the cast credits identify Mr. Henderson as "General Taggi".

The ANH novelization (and EU conjecture) refers to him as "General Tagge" but since this does contradict absolute canon which states Taggi, the film determines the outcome if in doubt or dispute.

On the other hand, the novelization gave the character a first name (Motti calls him "Romodi") which the film did not. Since "Romodi" doesn't contradict the film, then it must be his first name.

So according to George Lucas Canon it's "General Romodi Taggi", while "General Cassio Tagge" is obviously erroneous. ;)

Some rumors from Making Star Wars:
    http://www.slashfilm.com/rogue-one-characters/

I'm having difficulties copying the info from my phone but it's extremely promising so I'll just summarize.

He apparently is playing one of the Empire's top scientists responsible for taking the idea the Geonosians came up with and making it more practical and functional. He spotted several flaws in their design and improved it so he's highly regarded within the Empire. They liken him to Oppenheimer as a scientist with a conscious though and here's where it gets interesting... He apparently turns his back on the Empire because of what he's contributed to and enlists the help of his only daughter (Felicity Jones), who's similarly brainy, and some bounty hunters to give the Rebels what they need.

If this report is true then it's probably safe to say he tries to voice his concerns and/or refuses to build something and his access is removed and he's potentially jailed or killed. This is where his daughter would then come in. It almost has to play out this way otherwise it's illogical he wouldn't simply give the designs to his daughter and if she has the designs there's no need for an elaborate heist.

Good heist films tend to have the villains become aware of the likelihood of a robbery or con artist attempt beforehand so that we, the audience, are left wondering how our heroes could possibly pull it off with them on high alert. It's a huge part of the functionality of any heist story. I expect the same here if this report is true.

There has to be a reason why he couldn't get her the plans and there has to be a reason the Empire suspects somebody might be coming for the plans even if they're simultaneously arrogant enough to believe that any attempt will prove fruitless given their technology and protocols. So, this report makes sense and him contacting the Rebels and being caught could be the catalyst for both things.

Well, after hearing those reports I think it's safe to assume that his character will die.

The last rumor I heard still supports the notion. He's the engineer that made the Death Star work but nevertheless deliberately included a design flaw that could help to destroy the battle station.

Assuming that Leia did know there was a flaw would really explain why she put everything on this one card, when she allowed the Death Star to track them to Yavin IV.

I'm kinda glad he isn't the bad guy. He gives fantastic bad guy, but I'd like to see him do good guy.

As for being Felicity's characters father, the way they describe the character/relationship in that article, I love it! I could totally get on board with that!

I welcome Mads being a good guy. Tristan from King Arthur is still my favorite character of his a dozen years on.

He plays a fantastic villain (see Casino Royale or Hannibal for proof of that). But yeah, I can see him not wanting to be completely typecast (especially since I think that his role in Doctor Strange, which comes out like a month before RO, will also be a villainous one). I still think that either Ben Mendelsohn or Forest Whitaker will end up playing the main villain (probably the former).

As for him being Felicity's character's father, yeah that could work. It gives both of them extra motivation to want the mission to succeed.

Yeah, I know he's a great villain too. I like when actors who are generally cast as one type play the opposite every once in a while (my favorite performance by Christopher Lee remains the Duc Di Richleau.) Back to Mads here, I'd be just fine with the Oppenheimer slant for the character and Mads being Felicity's pop in this.

Mads has played a number of non-villains in his career. And he's always very good. I have no fears.

I'm curious to know if this cloaked character is Mads Mikkelsen. Whatever's in this chamber seems of vital importance to the Emperor, hence the Imperial guards. I'm sure very few people would be trusted to enter such a place. If he did help design the Death Star, he'd fit the bill.

^That's what I think. It think this is Mads, kneeling before a hologram link to the Emperor, updating him on the DS or some such. I think we will see McDairmid cameo in this scene.

I get the impression from the trailer that Mendelson and Mikkelsen are the top hands-on guys of the DS originally (Mendelson an admiral and espionage guy trying to sniff out the rebellion and protect his battle station, and Mikkelsen the science guy handling all the test and making sure the laser works), but once the plans are stolen, well one or both of these top guys gets killed, and Palpatine then calls in TARKIN and VADER to clean up their mess in Act 3, find the plans and take charge at the Death Star. But I think we'll only get mention of Tarkin or see him very briefly via video screen. Vader I think we'll see in action for about 15 minutes at the end of the movie. Not a ton of scenes but 5-6 GREAT ones.

I think it may well be Mads, but I'm not sold on the holo thing yet. When have we seen a holo projector that needs all of those wires, steam, vents, etc? 20 years ago he was appearing on a little spider thing walking around.

I'm leaning more towards it having something to do with the operation of the death star. The core, the power source, the big blue visual effect to denote something important, whatever would likely be pretty well protected.

That looks like cold storage to me, not a hologram link. Wonder if it's a chamber, of sorts, where the Emperor periodically heals his decrepit body. Or perhaps freezes himself to extend his life. Who knows? Whatever it is, it looks fantastic.

Yours is a good theory and I agree that this looks like something key to the DS operations like part of its core. But the kneeling is what's throwing me off. Maybe the character is not kneeling, just walking slowly down steps (or the footage is slowed for dramatic effect). It could be Mads' scientist/engineer character simply approaching the core of the DS to examine something.

Interesting that we didn't get a glimpse of his face at all in the trailer. I wonder why that is?
