    So very interesting!
That answers some of the questions about the relationship between this story and Mist Encounter, Outbound Flight, etc.

I think the surprise of a blue-skinned humanoid should be a little more subdued thanks to the Pantorans, but I guess the glowing red-red eyes are distinctive enough.

Also, had me double take until I saw this 'Barris' only had one 's'.

    Nanci @nancipants
@DelReyStarWars the latest Thrawn excerpt says the book is released in the U.K. on April 6. Has the date changed?

    Star Wars Books@DelReyStarWars
@nancipants nope. That's a typo. It will be updated

    YES! Barris is back!

I hope Kirtan offs him this time too. Not because I care about the unfortunately surnammed Barris, but the glorious return of Kirtan Loor has been long in coming.

The language thing is an interesting point -- Eli has a perspective on Thrawn the others won't have. I wonder if Zahn plans to use that to any effect.

Interesting that we're seeing the return of Thrawn's mouthful of a name.

I can finally read the article. Interesting that we also see the return of:

    the language of Sy Bisti.

Wasn't the name of the CorSec guy from the X-Wing series Gil Bastra?

I understand your feeling, it can look like a too easy retcon of something that happened in the past and sound like "hey, I told you, you should have listened to me".

But I prefer seeing that the other way around, just like someone said before: Palpatine was right to do nothing against the Ewoks, and Thrawn would have been wrong to act against them, because they would have clearly stand for the rebels and seen the imperials as enemies. Palpatine (and Thrawn) could not have predicted that the Ewoks would worshiped C3PO and obeyed him.
There was nothing they could do (except maybe more soldiers to guard the shield generator, but it was a trap led by Palpatine)

No one can fight the plot armor of the heroes. Not Thrawn, not Palpatine. It's a special power just like the one the heroes of Rebels have and even warriors as powerful as Vader cannot harm them, even Palpatine cannot kill them, even Thrawn cannot destroy them. They will always win and escape. So whatever Thrawn says, he would have failed and we know it. The heroes had to win just because they're the heroes.

Anyway, Palpatine ignoring the warning advice about the locals sounds totally like him. In the movies, he was despising the rebels, so of course he despises the ewoks too. I can't imagine Palpatine saying "ah, yes, I already know the Ewoks are very dangerous". If Thrawn had seen the ewoks maybe he would have changed his mind and think they're not a threat. After all he was uncapable of seeing revolting noghri assassins as a threat so Thrawn has a real perception problem, haha.

My friend, have you read the wonder that is Missed Chance? Kirtan makes a surprise appearance. And um. Surprise something else. Which um. I might have given away.

Also read the prequel Side Trip. That one stars Thrawn being weird. Stackpole and Zahn need to hang out more.

So with it coming out the 6th in the UK, will the one-week spoiler ban be extended?

What do you mean, being weird? I liked anonymous-mando-mercenary-Thrawn. Strangely he was really "in character" despite the fact of being on the field and in some infiltration mission. Proof that he can do more than just sit on a chair and give orders. (for the ones who were surprised to see him training in SW Rebels)

Ahhh I realize I must explain my thought process here. It was more of a coming-together-of-two-quirky-things that makes me reflect on that story with a Zahnian arced brow.

1 - Thrawn decides to masquerade as a bounty hunter, but of all people he chooses to cosplay Jodo Kast. I can sort of understand it in the story, but it's still a very odd choice on his part. The cool masquerading as the uncool masquerading as the cool.

2 - The art that eventually accompanied this story was really peculiar:

The second one is sort like those kid activity books -- "circle 5 wacky things in this picture"

If the new EU wants to do this, I recommend they choose Cad Bane this time.

He needed a full helmet to hide his face. A Chiss doesn't look like a Duros. They're both blue with red eyes but that's all, the Duros eyes are not glowing and they don't have a nose.

I don't know well Jodo kast but I guess that there were not many Mando-looking mercenaries to choose from and Fett was too popular.

About the art, well, I've seen worse, the original art from the novel Mist encounter was quite... strange, as well...

Jodo Kast, in WEG at least, is a decent bounty hunter with a nasty rep.

    Just not Boba Fett.

Nope, and besides I doubt Thrawn would want Fett to blow his cover, anyway.
