The first title of each trilogy refers to a person

The Phantom Menace = Darth Sidious
A New Hope = Luke Skywalker

The second title of each trilogy refers to an organization doing something
Attack of the Clones = The clones attack the enemy and start a war.
The Empire Strikes Back = The Empire attacks the Rebels and gets revenge.

The third title of each trilogy refers to what each trilogy has been building towards

Revenge of the Sith = The Sith retake the galaxy
Return of the Jedi = The Jedi finally come back

"The Force Awakens," while an amalgamation of the first and second groups, could still fit in the first group when you consider it pretty clearly refers to Rey.

"The Last Jedi" just doesn't fit at all with the second group though.

Well there is a vague sort of pattern there, I guess. But I'd rather have good strong titles than titles that are fit to a pattern. The Last Jedi is a brilliant title in my opinion.

This. I don't particularly care what the title is as long as it's good. Fitting into a pattern is probably the least of my concerns.

I asked Rian Johnson on Twitter as to why he broke the naming tradition - but he never responded :(

There are several patterns and they aren't vague in any way.

I approve of "The Last Jedi", though.

I also approve of the title "The Last Jedi"

However, I would like to point out the stories of SW do have patterns in mirroring and paralleling. (this was a GL thing)

Also it may be too soon to judge the title or give it a label that does or does not adhere to today's desires.

I firmly believe if we are patient then everything will work out and we'll be satisfied.

Since we're in a third Trilogy, there's going to be 9 titles, I've tried to break down the titles in terms of three

We've had three titles with "of the":

Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi

So Episode 9 won't have "of the"

We've had three titles with "The ____ _____"
The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi

That leaves two titles: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back

Still no pattern unless you breakdown the titles by articles, verbs, nouns and adjectives.

Article, noun, verb in order can have TFA and The ESB fall under it.
Article, adjective, noun can have ANH, TPM and TLJ fall under it.

So we have only two titles, TFA and the ESB, with article, noun and verb order.
    '
Thus I think Episode IX will have article, noun, verb in order.

Now the big thing is that the ESB has "back" in it, which is an adverb.

So Episode IX could still follow "the last movie in the trilogy has 4 words in the title" rule.
Thus Episode IX title will have "article, noun, verb, adverb" in that order.

The pattern is that there's no pattern. :p Maybe GL did adhere to one but ST seems to have tossed it out of the window. However, maybe the next trilogy will repeat whatever ST pattern created in order to rhyme with it. PT and OT had to rhyme but that doesn't mean ST has to rhyme with them. It could start from the scratch, a new song if you will. ;)

One girl asked Rian Johnson for his birthday the meaning about the title of Episode 8 ,and surprisely he answered!

"@ndrichter It means the final Jedi. Happy birthday!"

    At least is something, huh?

And more about the opening scene:

    Looks like Luke's speaking first

"We just saw more "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" footage. In it, Luke asks Rey, "Who are you?" Then we see her deftly handle a lightsaber."

That was a little joke, on Rian's part. "Last" being synonymous with "final," and all that. :)

I am not sure. I think he told the truth. Rey will not be a proper Jedi, she will start with Jedi training but by Episode IX she will evolve into something new.

    We've waited so
We've waited sooo long for a female Jedi in a big screen film, then they finally give us the most badass, powerful female force user in the galaxy, but she doesn't get to be a jedi. I mean, I guess it doesn't matter that much. She still has the lightsaber and gets to be super kickass. But still, it's weird that we'll never get a female Jedi. But maybe her new order will be cooler than the Jedi boys club and we'll all we be like jedi schmedi, Reyalites, are way cooler. Only time will tell.

The Jedi order is flawed. It was shown in the prequels. So not being a Jedi may be actually good, she may be able to have a stronger connection with the Force rather than by limiting herself with the flawed Jedi philosophy.

    I just sounded like Sidious, didn't I ?

*teehee* Nothing wrong with sounding like Sidious. :p

You're right that the Jedi did have a lot of stupid rules. I imagine Rey's order will be more like unschooling than the private Jedi academy. Since she's a natural force user and self-taught, she'll prolly encourage her students to just go with the flow and do what feels natural, rather than making them meditate for hours and hit robots with blindfolds on. I will miss the Yoda piggyback rides though, they were fun!!!!

Yes, he told the truth that "last" has the same meaning as "final." :)

There was no pattern, except the pattern fans created in their headcanon. The same as the new trend that says that The Force Awakens The Last Jedi blablabla

    It is just headcanon.

ANH, TPM ,TFA all describe the hero or villain of the trilogy

TESB, AOTC describe a military advance

ROTJ ,ROTS describe the avenging hero , villain .

You telling me there is no pattern there ???
