Loved the programme. Goodall shoehorning in his modal recitals in his tuneful but thin voice. Sounding like he's giving a lecture to the most serious minds and to an inattentive six year old all at the same time. Always good.

It did bug me how often he claimed listeners had "never" heard anything done like this etc, etc. Which is at odds with the Beatle's own expressed influences.

e.g. Strawberry Fields - Lennon and McCartney heard Good Vibrations and from there decided that they should experiment with making a record from separate recordings in different studios, edited together as they see fit.

The Penny Lane super-piano sound - directly inspired by the recording of Pet Sounds. Particularly McCartney favourite God Only Knows with its combined keyboard of harpsichord, piano and treated piano

The part that I thought he did get absolutely right in that respect was Within You, Without You - which was completely unlike anything that most pop record listeners would have been used to or ever heard of at that time.

The programme was fantastic. Especially the picking apart of the songs from a musical theory perspective. [face_love]

Seen during the pre-show of last week's Rifftrax live remote:

    DID YOU KNOW...
Paul McCartney really DID die in 1966, and was replaced by a evil lookalike cyborg as part of a fiendish plot to inflict "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime" upon the world.

It's a shame that wasn't released twelve months earlier, it would have been the ideal theme for the Star Wars Holiday Special. Imagine Carrie Fisher singing this one!

    McCartney tonight.

I saw him last time he toured NZ too, which was 25 freaking years ago (March 1993)

Did anyone catch this in a theater this month? I think July 8 was the main screening day in the UK, but here in the US, there seem to be screenings in a number of cities all the way through various dates in July and even into August...

You can check for a screening date in specific areas here:

huh, thought this was kind of interesting. newly uncovered tape of meeting near the end of the beatles reveals that abbey road wasn't actually intended to be their last album. they were still talking, at least on sep 8 1969, about what to do about their next single, how to structure their next album, etc.

there's also a new stage show about abbey road opening next week.

I'm not really all that surprised that they were still talking about continuing. From what I read about the tape John was doing most of the talking and Paul was obviously high; John in particular was erratic in what he wanted at the time.

Anyone else getting psyched for Get Back? I am kind of disappointed there won't be a theatrical release, but I am eagerly anticipating all six hours of the streaming version. Been starting to fall down multiple Beatles-related YT vid and new article rabbit holes lately...

So, Giles Martin, son of George Martin, has been remixing the albums. He went through Sgt. Pepper to Let It Be. Those were easier to remix because the band used 8-track tapes. Revolver and earlier used more primitive 4-track or fewer tapes, meaning the band would record several instruments at once and it makes them difficult to isolate. But thanks to technology developed for Peter Jackson's Get Back that allowed the filmmaker to isolate conversations that couldn't be heard before, they were able to apply it to Revolver. It definitely has more "depth," the individual instruments/vocals are easier to discern, and the bass is stronger. Sounds more modern.

They've been making some interesting music videos to coincide with the remix.
