Newly announced short story about fancy fancy people. Look at this author list!

This collection of four short stories will focus on creatures from the glamorous casino world of Canto Bight, described as the galactic version of Monaco. The book, which hits stores on Dec. 5, will be written by Saladin Ahmed, Rae Carson, Mira Grant, and John Jackson Miller.

“It’s a city filled with opportunity. There are very high stakes in this city,” Siglain says. “You’re going to follow four different aliens who will lead you through some of the gambling parlors and the racetracks and, you know, just this beautiful, lush city that’s as far from the Episode IV cantina as you can get. This is Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous for Star Wars. But looks can certainly be deceiving, and you know, everything isn’t always as beautiful as it seems.”

The writers, editors and Lucasfilm story group went through images of the creatures from Neal Scanlan’s creature shop for The Last Jedi and picked curious beings they thought might have interesting stories to tell.

“The effects team had a lot of ideas about the characters that they were creating, even just some of the background aliens. ‘I think this is his backstory or this is her backstory.’ And we’ve been able to take those and run with them. We looked at this as Casablanca and Rick’s Café.”

Aside from 'Yay more JJM' my first thought was sadly how will this release in the UK? We got Perfect Weapon as Kindle only, but then we got the Alien tales as a collection in hardback only... such a mess.

Sounds interesting though, I particularly like the 'four different aliens' aspect as I do feel we need more original alien characters in the new books.

I'm okay with aliens so long as they're fancy, so this should be good.

can people in the UK use amazon.com to buy physical books?

I know sometimes electrical appliances are forbidden, but books should be ok as long as you are wiling to pay for custom duty and shipping.

    edit:

I'm not familiar with Rae Carson but Mira Grant is Seanan McGuire who writs the October Daye urban fantasies and Swallow Hill Ghost story collection featuring Rose Marshall. I'm also looking forward to Ahmed's sequel to his fantasy Arab novel. "All below shall obey!" *shudders*

UK never got the Aliens collection officially if I recall. Any copy you could pick up via Amazon, wordery, and even forbidden planet was imported.

So I would pleased if we can get it at all. My biggest concern is whether we get the YA releases same day
Lost stars got lost in the release schedules but we got the main 3 and BTA on the same day. Ahsoka only got released in the UK in May!

well yeah all you have to do is go to amazon.com instead of amazon.co.uk

and pay for import duties, I guess. For collectors it should be worth it.

Hopefully they will end up in actual movie...
We also had 4 stories about different aliens from TFA and almost everything was cut from the movie (Zuvio, Ithano, Bobbajo etc).

Its just my personal annoyance that due to whatever deals they've struck YA stuff in particular never ends up on Kindle over here so I set out into the brave new world of the reboot thinking 'digital only would be nice' then Lost Stars happened....

On topic though, I wouldn't mind if they weren't in the movie personally, I just want some interesting characters who could potentially reappear somewhere else. Hopefully this place will be a bit more than a fancy Mos Eisley.

Hopefully the fact JJM is still involved in SW means we can get a sequel to A New Dawn someday, would be nice to see how Hera + Kanan meet Sabine and Zeb in book form.

I just searched amazon.com with Star Wars Canto Bight and nothing came up.

    Qel

Can you register for a amazon.com account? Use that for your kindle. Maybe they blocked it. But my kindle account is still the amazon.com version. That's how I can subscribe to magazines such as asimovs. Amazon.ca just don't have magazines.

You can usually order physical books across borders and import them, but digital licensing doesn't cover that. I would not recommend trying to circumvent digital licensing rules on ebooks -- probably not legal, and additionally, the retailer may take action against your account.

The senate will not sit still for this. When they heard you attacked a legally bought item.....

More seriously though, the place I'm in did not have kindle ebook service despite the fact the amazon webpage sells the kindle devices. You were supposed to buy ebooks in amazon.com instead of the local amazon branch. I bought like more than 50 books by amazon.com. amazon.ca have some ebooks now, and canadians can buy from amazon.ca. If one day amazon comes and say all your amazon.com ebooks are illegal if you are not in the US, I imagine there would be a boycott of amazon in Canada.

For anyone in the UK who wants the US hardback, there is an easy and simple solution: Go to Wordery or Book Depository and pre-buy the US copy as soon as it becomes for available for pre-order.

Quick, easy, often a decent price, no messing around with import dues - just glorious capitalism at work.

Nearer the time things can get hazy, with only the UK available but it's not an absolute rule, it varies.

Sorry I really didn't intend to derail this like that....let's just focus on the book.

JJM aside the other names don't ring any bells, is anyone familiar with them?

So there might be more management consultancies and performance coaches eh GrandAdmiralJello?

Have to wonder about how good these stories could be, if the authors have never been anywhere remotely Monégasquian.

    See my post

Rae Carson is the only one I'm not familiar with

    Again

Mira Grant is the pseudonym for Seanan McGuire, who writes urban fantasies, horrors, ghost stories, etc.
Saladin Ahmed writes the Serpent Thrones book. I'm looking forward to its sequel
    JJM Everyone is familiar with.

Also, if anyone reads comics, Saladin Ahmed is writing the Black Bolt series for Marvel.

I don't think any of the authors have been in space either, but they seem to do all right. :p

Also suspect the Monaco reference is more in capturing the feel as opposed to claiming authenticity.

Anyway: apparently these four stories are novella length with the book itself being novel length in total.

    Sounds fantastic.

This looks promising. I thought the JTTLJ offerings were a little skimpy, and this adds some more voices to the whole thing.

This is the first Journey to TLJ book that genuinely interests me.

That being said, if this is like the pre-TFA alien short stories, I can't wait to read four stories about aliens who may or may not be glimpsed for two seconds in the actual film, having adventures that have absolutely nothing to do with the film's setting.

The more I hear about Canto Bight, the more interested I am in seeing more about it. I doubt I'll be that upset if it turns out this is just another preemptive Tales from... book.

The book should release in the UK at the same time as the US publication. I can't speak to issues with other books (particularly from other publishers) not being available in the UK - but as with our other titles this one should be no different. Just had a phone call with our UK friends the other day actually.

Also, there will be more than 4 aliens ;) Several more in fact.

The goal is to make the city come alive as much as any of the characters, let you really feel a sense of what that place is like. I have high hopes that we'll pull that off. Whether you think that "matters" or "relates" to the film, is up to you.
